Cameron Monaghan Career
For his performance as Winthrop Paroo in the ABC television rendition of The Music Man, Monaghan first gained widespread recognition in 2003. Director and executive producer Jeff Bleckner defended his choice to cast 9-year-old Monaghan by saying, “There are some people, when you put them up on film, they sort of leap off the screen at you. With Cameron, things were like that. He was it as soon as we saw him. Everybody with that beautiful charm was what we were looking for. Cameron possessed it.
Monaghan made the switch to theatrical cinema roles in 2005, as Timmy in the indie western Brothers in Arms. In the fantasy comedy Click the next year, he played the annoying next-door neighbor Kevin O’Doyle. The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, Dog Gone, Safe Harbor, and Another Harvest Moon were among the roles in later feature films in which he appeared. He also portrayed the young detective Bob Andrews in the Three Investigators movie series.
Monaghan joined the cast of the Showtime comedy-drama series Shameless in April 2010. Monaghan plays Ian Gallagher, the gay, bipolar teenage son of a huge dysfunctional Chicago family, in the series, which debuted in January 2011. Monaghan’s portrayal received praise from Sarah Hughes of The Independent for offering “one of the more nuanced depictions of a gay teenager to be seen on US TV.” The Boston Globe’s Matthew Gilbert called Monaghan’s performance “extraordinary.” The gay-interest media outlet AfterElton.com included Monaghan on its list of “2011’s Break-Out TV Actors” based in part on his portrayal of Ian. The fifth season of the show was renewed by Showtime in February 2014, and it will premiere in 2015.

Cameron Monaghan Controversies
Cameron Monaghan, who plays Cal Kestis in Fallen Order, has received a lot of praise for his work on the game. Kestis’ look has been altered in some fan mods for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, including the substitution of his red hair for brown or black hair. One of these moderators received a nasty response from Monaghan, which sparked some discussion on Twitter.
Monaghan commented, “Gotta love that there are insecure dudes out there who can’t handle playing as a redhead,” in response to a Kotaku post on a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order mod. Is it really still a thing to hate ginger people? We must be among the last remaining groups where it is OK to mock us for our birth or physical appearance, am I right? Monaghan then tweeted about the South Park skit that mocked “gingers,” but she has already deleted both of those tweets.
The media described Monaghan’s comments as “lashing out” at Jedi: Fallen Order modders and “ginger hate.” In response to these reports, Monaghan said he was “not heated” or “upset.” In his own words, he “tweeted jokes about red hair while eating a taco.” Some of these stories, according to Monaghan, are “clickbait.” Since then, Monaghan has removed several of the tweets in which he disparaged the media.
The initial tweets from Monaghan obviously have a serious tone, which is why it makes sense that some journalists characterized them in that manner. Although Cameron Monaghan claims he was joking, it’s equally plausible that he regrets the tweets and is attempting to minimize their impact. It’s also a mystery as to why Monaghan removed some of the tweets but left others up.
Nevertheless, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order itself shouldn’t be too negatively impacted by this tiny debate. Since its debut, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has received favorable reviews, and up to this point, most of the discussion on Monaghan in the game has been favorable. It would be wonderful to see Monaghan in more video games in the future, and I hope Respawn is given the opportunity to create more Star Wars video games.
