Cardi B just revealed what her look could have been for the 2024 Met Gala.
The rapper (31) shared a behind-the-scenes TikTok video of her preparations for the big day, and in one of the shots, she is made up like an old woman. It turns out she originally planned to debut an unrecognizable transformation on the carpet.
On May 8, makeup artist Erika La’ Pearl confirmed that the Grammy winner was considering cosplaying as an old woman with wrinkles, gray hair and, of course, a full beat. This seemed to be her interpretation of the “Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Reawakening” theme focused on making the old new again.
“This was the first idea we tested for the Met Gala with facial and body prosthetics,” Pearl wrote in a May 8 Instagram post showing an aged Cardi B taking a selfie.

Cardi B closed the 2024 Met Gala red carpet in the biggest dress of the night
Although the mom of two eventually decided to give up on the silliness, Alexis Stone, the mastermind behind the hyper-realistic MFX makeup, pulled off all the work that went into the concept.
The process involved a 3D scan of Cardi B from the neck up and 18 pieces of prosthetics on her face, neck, arms and hands. Stone flew to New York to test the “Sleeping Beauty” look the Saturday before the event, but the creative direction changed.
Hairstylist Tokyo Stylez was in charge of styling the wig that turned Cardi B into Cardi G (the “G” stands for “grandma” according to Tokyo Stylez).
Although the extreme makeover never made it to the carpet, it seemed like Cardi B always planned to wear the black dress she appeared in.
In the TikTok clip, she poses in a gorgeous outfit, which featured a voluminous train that required multiple entourages to carry, while donning a gray wig.

Cardi B explains why she called her Met Gala dress designer ‘Asian’ instead of his name
While the creation was definitely applaudable, it got Cardi B in trouble. She drew criticism after calling Chinese designer Sensen Lii, who made the dress, “Asian and all” instead of saying his real name in Vogue interview.
Cardi B has since explained why she was momentarily speechless, writing in now-expired Instagram Stories that she a.) thought about posing in her dress after her original plan to take the podium was scrapped and b.) “forgot [how] to say the designer’s name because his name is a bit complicated.”
