Carl Radke Admits His Sobriety Was Tested the Night He Left His Apartment with Lindsay Hubbard (Exclusive)

Carl Radke’s sobriety has thankfully remained strong amid his split from Lindsay Hubbard.

“I didn’t take a drink,” Radke, 38, told PEOPLE at BravoCon 2023 in Las Vegas on Friday. “I didn’t pick up cocaine and those are the things I have a big problem with. I’m really proud that I was able to stay strong.”

The Summer house star admitted his sobriety was put to the test immediately after he broke off his engagement to Hubbard, 37, this summer and checked into a hotel room.

“I got a hotel room the night or the day after or the day of the interview,” he recalled. “I talked to Lindsay’s father. He said, ‘Take some space.’ And I said, ‘I agree.'”

Kyle Cooke says Carl Radke and Lindsay Hubbard couldn’t communicate ‘without a third party’ before the split

“So I got a hotel room that night,” he continued. “I walked into the hotel, the guy saw how disheveled I was from everything that had happened. He said, ‘What’s going on?’ I said, ‘I’m dealing with something at home.'”

A few minutes after Radke entered his hotel room, a hotel employee appeared at his door with a bottle of wine.

“That was the strength I had in that moment to just say, ‘No, I can’t,'” Radke said. “I’m proud of that. These are the times when your mental health is really hard [and] sobriety. I just try to move forward with respect and focus on myself and try to live a happy life.”

The reality star credited the “amazing support” he has in his life for helping him stay strong.

“The sober community is amazing,” Radke said. “I was committed to keeping my AA meetings. People who probably hated me and still come up to me and say, ‘You know, I’m here for you, I’m here for you.'”

In January, Radke celebrated two years of sobriety. The death of his brother, who struggled with addiction and mental health issues in 2020, prompted Radke to seek help.

“My brother never stuck to a program and it was something I needed to do and I’m really proud of myself for doing it,” Radke said on Watch what’s happening live in 2021. “So I feel great and I’m happy to be here.”

The Syracuse University graduate told PEOPLE at BravoCon that calling off his wedding to Hubbard was harder for him to handle than his brother’s death.

“This was harder than my brother’s death, I’m not even kidding,” Radke said. “It was very, very painful and emotional.”

“I’m holding on here. Part of me is like, so proud to be here, part of the Bravo family,” he said. “I was at Summer house for eight seasons. I love our show, I love the network. I love our fans and I just wanted to come here and present our show to the best of my ability and with my head held high.”
