Carl Weathers’ Cause of Death Revealed a Week After Rocky Actor Dies at 76: Report

Carl Weathers’ cause of death has been revealed.

The actor, whose family announced his death at age 76 earlier this month, died of “atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease,” according to a death certificate obtained by The Blast.

Weathers’ death certificate states that the actor was at his home in Venice, Calif., when he died at 12:18 a.m. local time, according to the outlet.

According to The Blast, the document stated that investigators ruled Weathers’ manner of death “natural” and noted that he had suffered from heart disease for years. It was also reported that the actor’s son, Matthew Weathers, was the person who notified authorities of Weathers’ death.

The Blast reported that Weathers’ family will take home his ashes after he is cremated.

A representative for Weathers, as well as the Los Angeles County pathologist, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Weathers’ family announced his death in a statement, noting that the deceased Rocky and Predator the actor “died peacefully in his sleep” the previous day, according to deadline i Diversity.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Carl Weathers has passed away,” the family said in a statement.

“Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. With his contribution to film, television, art and sports, he left an indelible mark and is recognized around the world and among generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner and friend,” he adds. in the press release.

Weathers played professional football in the NFL in the early 1970s, before embarking on an acting career that spanned more than forty years. He notably starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in Rocky franchise as boxer Apollo Creed, starting with the 1976 original.

The actor also starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987 Predator and recently played the character of Greef Karga in Star Wars series, the mandalorian, which earned him a 2021 Emmy Award nomination.

Weathers also took on a voice role Toy story 4 and had a recurring role on all three of NBC’s Dick Wolf Chicago series in recent years.

Stallone, 77, was among a number of celebrities who paid tribute to Weathers following news of his death.

“Yesterday we lost a legend,” the actor and director wrote on Instagram, along with an emotional video in his honor. “My life changed forever for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. Get some rest and keep hitting.”

The actor was also known for playing Chubbs in Adam Sandler’s 1996 golf comedy. Happy Gilmoreas well as for playing a fictionalized version of yourself on Arrested development.

“True great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete,” Sandler, 57, wrote in his tribute to Weathers on Instagram. “So much fun to always be around.”
