NBC News White House Correspondent Carol Lee is back at work and covering everything from the invasion of Ukraine to the Iranian nuclear deal after the traumatic birth of her second son Monty. Seven-month-old Monty, who was born in Washington, D.C., with a rare congenital cardiac abnormality, is in good health and at home with Lee.
Lee, 44, is sharing her birth story rather than burying her experience and brushing it aside. She wants to advocate for women to take the time they require and raise awareness about working mothers who experience difficult deliveries.
“I find it useful to hear the unpleasant things. It’s crucial to understand that having a challenging period is common, and you don’t have to smile your way through it, Lee told Know Your Value.
Monty had surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia shortly after being born because he had transposition of the great arteries (TGA), a disease in which important heart arteries have flipped sides. When Monty was born, he needed feeding and oxygen tubes since he had trouble breathing and eating.
Lee herself had a challenging delivery. Her placenta previa, a disease in which the cervix is covered by the placenta and results in internal bleeding, affected her. She ultimately required a C-Section and a blood transfusion. During the ordeal, she briefly lost consciousness.
My blood pressure fell through the floor and I lost a tonne of blood. I experienced a panic attack after they informed me that Monty was not doing well when I awoke, said Lee.
Thankfully, Monty’s procedure went well. He was brought home nine days after his birth, and since then, together with his older brother Hudson, 8, Lee Harmon’s husband Lt. Col. Ryan Harmon, and the family dog Pancakes, has thrived.
His intentions are good. We’re experiencing typical newborn issues right now, like a lot of crying and nighttime awakenings,” Lee added.
Lee has experienced a steady but challenging comeback. After Monty was born, her husband rejoined the military and put in up to 19-hour days. Most of the time, Lee watched the two children by herself as her body recovered from the stress. I have a terrific network of amazing friends, but if I could go back in time, Lee stated, “I would have gotten more assistance.”However, Lee was able to take a six-month break before joining NBC News, which was a huge assist.
