Caroline Harding News

After months of discussion, the institution decided to gradually increase RA’s salary to reflect housing costs through the 2024-2025 academic year. With RA’s compensation increase as a starting point, the institution will also make salary adjustments for other ResLife student staff roles.

Following staff agitation over salary increases during the previous academic year, adjustments were made. Vice President of Student Affairs Smita Ruzicka and Dean of Students Derek Doucet informed The Campus that they were already working behind the scenes to raise ResLife’s salary before they were contacted by students.

According to AJ Place, associate dean of student life, ResLife’s salary has increased “nearly every year” since 2016. According to Place, “these latest revisions will help us get to the level of room reimbursement for RAs, which is the point reference used by many schools.” “In relation to the RA levels, other levels of position compensation are established.”

As of the 2024/2025 academic year, RA’s salary will be $9,600, which is room rate. As a result, compensation for RA managers is $12,750, February RAs receive $4,800, and community assistants (CAs) receive $4,000, according to an email Doucet sent to students seeking better salaries in May 2022. To To bring compensation closer to the cost of housing, ResLife workers received a pay increase for the 2022-2023 academic year and will receive additional increases for the 2023-2024 academic year.

ResLife student staff who contacted administrators to request a pay increase felt that the previous pay rates for ResLife positions did not adequately compensate them for the work they did as student leaders. Kamryn You Mak ’23 stated: “I was disappointed and started talking to my colleagues to see what we could do. You Mak and other ResLife staff members wrote a letter to senior management outlining the main justifications for why they thought ResLife staff should receive a raise.

“During the academic year, students first turn to us for help when they have questions about classes, enrollment issues, conflicts with roommates and friends, or are feeling homesick, or simply need someone to talk to. While much of this work cannot be measured, the people and community of Middlebury will benefit greatly, the students said.

The letter also discusses the time commitment and sacrifice ResLife staff have made in giving up their weekends and the increased responsibility ResLife staff have taken on during Covid-19.
