“Charlie Fairhead was inspired by a true nurse – Pete Salt. Together with the writers and producers, I tried to bring to Charlie the compassion, kindness, heroism and righteousness that we don’t have. We all see and love Pete. I want to thank Pete and everyone else at the time who inspired me to bring this character to life.”
Following news of Derek’s passing, the BBC has confirmed that his final footage will be aired in early 2024 so viewers won’t have to say goodbye for a while. The broadcaster also confirmed that the details of his exit story will be revealed in the near future.

Jon Sen, executive producer Victims BBC Studios also released a statement. “Derek and I often joke that, after a long and dramatic career in the NHS, there’s hardly anything that Charlie hasn’t seen. So I was absolutely amazed when Derek came up with this brilliant idea of what to do. Charlie’s departure as part of an upcoming story, is too good to miss,” he said.
“We will all miss Derek immensely. For nearly four decades, Derek has created an iconic character woven into British television history. We will remember the art, humor and presence. his presence on screen. And we’re also missing a friend, so in a few months we’re going to have a ball to shoot the last chapter of Charlie.”
Injured The Instagram account also confirmed his departure from the show, stating that Derek will continue filming for the series throughout the fall. Causing backlash from fans, many were quick to respond. “It’s horrifying, Charlie was a victim for many years. [It] It will be interesting to watch the series without him, until he is killed, so there is a chance that he will return in the future, if only for one episode,” one person wrote.

Derek has previously talked about how much he enjoys playing Charlie on the show. Expressing admiration for the character, he told Holby TV in 2010: ‘He [Charlie] He has an uncanny ability to forget everything else going on in his life while at work. He was absolutely focused from day one. But everyone has a tendency to win. Sometimes he spends too much time trying to hear people’s stories instead of making a brave decision.”
