After British vintage aesthetics store Cath Kidston went bankrupt for the second time in two years, Next bought the Cath Kidston brand for £8.5m.

As PricewaterhouseCoopers managers prepare to close four UK Cath Kidston stores in London, Ashford, Cheshire Oaks and York after the shares auction, an estimated 125 jobs could be at risk. Administrators also receive a 12-week license to use the brand’s website.

The purchase is the latest move by Next to expand its brand portfolio, which already includes UK distribution rights for US clothing retailers Gap and Victoria’s Secret. Next also bought fashion brand Joules and online furniture company Made.com out of administration.

The clothing and home goods retailer helps struggling businesses maintain a UK presence by using its online marketing and delivery skills. Some of these brands are also used to fill empty space in high street stores while expanding their appeal to a larger market.

“Cath Kidston is a much loved lifestyle brand founded in 1993 and I am delighted to say that it has been acquired by Next, who will ensure that it continues to thrive under their ownership,” said Zelf Hussain, Joint Administrator and Partner at PwC. .

“The company has recently been experiencing extremely difficult market conditions, including pandemic-induced restrictions and, more recently, a decline in consumer spending driven by cost-of-living pressures and rising costs,” it said. the notice.

Known for her quirky retro patterns, Cath Kidston previously had 60 stores in the UK, plus franchise locations around the world. Hilco, a company specializing in restructuring, bought it in July 2020; however, it was relisted earlier this year.

In 1993, the company’s namesake, an interior designer who collaborated with famed decorator Nicky Haslam, opened her first store in London’s Notting Hill, selling trinkets and patterned tea towels.

He sold his ownership of the company years ago, and in April 2020, the brand called administrators as part of an attempted bailout by Hong Kong-based Baring Private Equity Asia.
