Peter Dutton is likely to promote Jacinta Price or Kerrynne Liddle to take over the Indigenous Australians portfolio. The position could still be reduced to the position of assistant to the shadow minister.
Peter Dutton, the opposition leader, is considering how to replace Julian Leeser, who resigned on Tuesday as shadow attorney general and minister for indigenous Australians.
Two indigenous members of the Coalition, Price and Liddle, were previously considered favorites for the post of Minister for Indigenous Australia. Some argued that Price’s promotion would strengthen the position of the National Party in government.
But Price is believed to have told some of her aides that she agreed it would be too early in her federal political career to serve as a minister without subordinates.
Promotion of either MP to the shadow cabinet is unlikely, according to the sources, as both are first-term senators who have never held shadow ministerial posts and because an early promotion could lead to jealousy among colleagues in the Workplace.
An alternative is to give Price or Liddle an assistant shadow ministry, with a current minister like Anna Ruston representing indigenous Australians.
The attorney general position is expected to go to a lawyer already in the cabinet, such as Michaelia Cash, Paul Fletcher or Michael Sukkar, to minimize the impact of the shakeup.
Due to their smaller current responsibilities, Cash, Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, and Fletcher, Shadow Minister for Science, Arts, Civil Services and the Digital Economy, are seen as the most likely candidates.
Since Sukkar is in charge of social services, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, housing and the homeless, giving him the position of attorney general could only be feasible if a major shakeup is planned.
Price accompanied Dutton on a tour of Alice Springs this week and promoted the idea of calling in the Australian Federal Police to “lend a hand” in the Northern Territory. Locals, according to Price, “almost gave up hope”, became “numb”, and others said that “the territory is now a failed state”.
“Sexual abuse is a truly serious crime, having a devastating effect on children, families and communities,” said Catherine Liddle, executive director of SNAICC, an organization that advocates for indigenous children. “This is not political football,” she said.
