Catherine O’Hara Recalls Her ‘Crush’ on Friend John Candy: ‘He Was Always Really Lovely’ (Exclusive)

Catherine O’Hara recalls being “so in love” with her friend and colleague John Candy.

The star of the new movie Argyll tells PEOPLE that she was drawn to the comedian’s kind and giving personality when they worked together in Toronto’s Second City comedy troupe and later on its spin-off show, SCTVwhich lasted from 1976 to 1984.

“He was just as beautiful as you want,” the 69-year-old actress recalls of Candy, who died in 1994.

Her feelings, however, were one-sided: O’Hara says Candy was already in a relationship with his wife, Rosemary, to whom he remained married until his death.

“I wouldn’t say he was interested in me in that way,” she says. “But I always liked him very much in the Second City Theater.”

O’Hara became a cast member in the 1970s after working as a barmaid, and Candy helped her hone her skills.

“He would always be ready to improvise with me after the performance. You do the show and then you do the improv after the show. This is how the next play is being built in the Second City Theatre. And he was always willing to try every idea,” she says.

He would often communicate with fans as well, using the two rules of improvisational comedy: “yes, and…” as well as “no, but…”

“People always say ‘yes, and…’ but ‘no, but…’ is just as important,” she explains. ” ‘Are you a doctor?’ ‘No, but I played one in commercials.’ He was the king of it.”

“You’d be with him on the street, in the mall, and someone would come up and just want to do comedy with him, and he’d always get it right away and give something back and see their eyes light up. up, like, ‘Oh, I’m doing a little bit with John Candy,'” he recalls.

“It’s so nice to be able to not have to invent a bull, because people loved it,” she says. “And when people ask, ‘What was he like?’ they want to hear what they think he would be like. And it’s so nice to be able to confirm their guesses about what he would be like in person.”

O’Hara also starred with Candy in the 1990 Christmas classic Home alone, which she calls “the perfect movie.” He played Gus, the “Polka King of the Midwest,” who roped O’Hara’s character back home to his son (Macaulay Culkin).

The actress met her husband, set designer and director Bo Welch, on the set of the 1998 comedy. bug juice.
