Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin was on the brink of a breakthrough in 1924. The faint rainbows of starlight captured on photographic lenses held the keys to understanding how the universe came to be. If only she had access to the history of starlight.

However, she persevered, becoming a pioneer. Payne-Gaposchkin was the first astronomer to receive a PhD. from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1925. She was the first woman at Harvard to be appointed a full professor in 1956, and a few months later she became the institution’s first department head.
Soon after starting work at the Harvard University Observatory in 1923, he made significant progress. She took it upon herself to examine the organization’s library of star spectra. These were fragments of starlight that revealed elements in the stars based on which wavelengths of light were not present.
