Career
Sonnen began his career in mixed martial arts in 1997. He was 19 years old then. In Vancouver, Washington, he defeated Ben Hailey. Jason “Mayhem” Miller was the next to succumb to him. His first loss came in the seventh fight, when he faced Trevor Prangley. He also lost to Forrest Griffin in 2003.
Sonnen made his UFC debut at UFC 55, where he faced Renato Sobral. He lost his first fight, but later defeated Trevor Prangley. The win came during UFC Fight Ultimate Fight Night 4. After losing to Jeremy Horn at UFC 60, he was quickly released by the organization.
In May 2006, he joined Bodog Fight before moving to World Extreme Cage Fighting. He rejoined the UFC after it was disbanded. Anderson Silva was challenged by Sonnen, but submitted after an arm punch. The CSAC suspended him. He returned to the UFC for the second time after his suspension. He also returned to light heavyweight and fought Silva again.
Sonnen tested positive for drugs. He failed the second one, and since it was his third failure, he was fired. In any case, he was already retired.
Joined Bellator MMA. Sonnen was defeated by Tito Ortiz in his first fight of 2017 on January 21st. Later that year, on June 24, he defeated Wanderlei Silver in their match. He also worked as a sports analyst and commentator.
