Chaka Khan is the mother of two children: daughter Indira and son Damien.

The “I’m Every Woman” singer (whose real name is Yvette Stevens) gave birth to her first child, daughter Indira “Milini” Khan, in 1973. A few years later, Chaka Khan gave birth to her son Damien Patrick Holland in the late ’70s during marriage to her second husband, Richard Holland.

Chaka Khan has historically kept her personal life private, including details about her children. However, Indira made rare comments about her mom during a talk show appearance in November 2019. Sisterhood when asked about the “most profound” thing she learned from the Grammy-winning artist.

Indira, who is a singer herself, recalled a time when she was experiencing “terrible stage fright” and Chaka Khan helped her center by sharing a reminder. “[She] he looked me dead in the face and said: ‘Milini! In honor of her firstborn’s birthday in December 2023, Chaka Khan shared a sweet video celebrating her on TikTok. “In 1973, on December 21, a great singer was born, a fantastic daughter, and she is mine,” she said. “Happy birthday, dear, and may all your wishes come true.”

Indira followed in her mother’s footsteps and continued her career as an artist. In the 90s, she was part of the R&B girl group Pretty In Pink. In an August 2023 Instagram post, Chaka Khan remembered the anniversary of the group’s 1991 debut album. Wake up.

Since then, Indira has continued to release music under the stage name I.Khan, and Chaka Khan has shown support for her daughter over the years. In December 2023, she encouraged her Facebook fans to check out Indira’s latest single, which was part of her debut album, IKHANIĆ.

Recently, Indira released her album Contagious in October 2024. Soon after, she teased that she would be sharing more work on her 51st birthday on December 21.

In addition to singing, Indira also tried her hand at acting. She appeared in a television movie in 2016 Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Storyin which she portrayed her mother.

When Indira was cast, Chaka Khan celebrated her daughter on Facebook, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of Indira getting her hair and makeup done. “I am so proud of my daughter, Indira Milini Khan, rocking like me for Miki Howard’s upcoming film!!” she wrote the title.

Indira is also a mother: she has a daughter, Raeven Gibson, and two sons, Jett and Josh. Raeven also welcomed her own child, a son named Mackenzie, making Indira a grandmother and Chaka Khan a great-grandmother for the first time.

During the interview with in November 2019 Sisterhood, Indira opened up about what it’s like to become a grandmother. She then explained: “Everything is new and it’s really exciting. I never thought I’d love someone else’s child like I love this baby.”

Over the years, Chaka Khan has mostly kept her second child out of the public eye.

Chaka Khan recently shared a rare birthday message for Damien in a March 2022 TikTok video, calling it a “special day” for her.

“Something very special happened to me on March 22, 1978 or the 9th, I won’t tell you which one, how is it?” she joked. “My son was born. … He’s my favorite boy in the whole world and I just wanted him to know how much I love him and I want to wish him a happy birthday, son.”

Damien is the father of daughter Daija Jade Holland, who has a birthday with her grandmother. Chaka Khan said The Guardian in April 2017 that she adopted her granddaughter when she was a child.

“There are a lot of things I missed out on as a young mom, because I was too busy growing up,” she explained to the outlet. “I’m better at it now. I adopted my granddaughter—my son’s daughter—when she was nine years old. She just turned 16 years old. Becoming a mother later in life was meant to be.”
