Champai Soren is an Indian politician who was elected as the 7th Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2024 after the former Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate minister. He belongs to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party and represents Selekela district in the Jharkhand Assembly.

Champai Soren was born on Thursday, November 1, 1956 (age 67; as of 2023) in Jilingora village, Selekela, Jharkhand. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. In 1974, he studied at Ramakrishna Mission English School (Bistupur, Jamshedpur, BSEB Patna) till class 10th. As a young man, he worked on the farm with his father.

He has served as a legislator for the Serikela parliamentary district for over 30 years since 1991 and is recognized for his deep loyalty to JMM leader Shibu Soren.
In 1991, he contested the by-election as an independent candidate, defeating the wife of influential JMM MP Krishna Maldi and won. In 1995, he won the assembly elections on JMM ticket. In 2000, he lost the assembly elections to Anantram Tudu of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected to the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from Selekela constituency from 2005 to 2009. In 2009, he was elected to the third Jharkhand Assembly and served until 2014. During his tenure, he served as Cabinet Member Minister of Science, Technology, Labor and Housing from September 11, 2010 until January 18, 2013. He was also elected as a Cabinet Minister on July 13, 2013 as Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Transport until December 28, 2014. From 2014 to 2019, he was elected as a member of the fourth Jharkhand Assembly. From December 29, 2019 to January 31, 2024, he served as Cabinet Minister for Dalit Tribes, Dalit Castes and Backward Classes Welfare in the Government of Jharkhand.

In 2024, he was elected as the Chief Minister (designate) of Jharkhand after the resignation of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Hemant resigned as chief minister of Jharkhand on January 31, 2024, after Enforcement Directorate officials visited Hemant’s house in Ranchi to question him in connection with the land fraud case. Around 8:30 that night, Soren visited Raj Bhavan, met Governor CP Radhakrishnan and ED officials and submitted his resignation. Hemant was arrested for ignoring a summons from the Department of Education in connection with an alleged money laundering investigation. His first trial was in November 2021 and related to illegal mining. Subsequently, he was interrogated again from January 20 to 31, 2023, regarding the issue of funds for illegal land transactions in Ranchi.
Champai was elected as the seventh designated chief minister of Jharkhand on January 31, 2024. He was sworn in as Chief Minister on February 2, 2024.
JMM leader and MP Mahua Maji, who claimed that Hemant has been detained by ED, said in a statement issued by her,
CM has been detained by ED. The Chief Minister has submitted his resignation to the Governor along with the ED team… Champai Soren will be the new Chief Minister… We have enough manpower. “
There were speculations that Hemant Soren would choose his wife for the position. However, after discussions between his party and Congress leaders, they agreed to choose Champai as the leader. On July 3, 2024, he resigned as Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

- He played an important role in the bifurcation of Bihar and Jharkhand and was instrumental in drawing new borders.
- In January 2023, he was airlifted from Sonali Airport to a hospital in Chennai in a special plane. On January 14, he was admitted to Tata General Hospital due to elevated blood sugar levels. When his condition showed no signs of improvement, doctors at Tata General Hospital decided to shift him to DMS in Chennai for further treatment.
