Chappell Roan Clarifies She's Voting for Kamala Harris After Facing Backlash Over Endorsement

Speaking about his recent interview with The Guardian was “taken completely out of context,” Chappell Roan released two statements explaining that she is voting for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election — but won’t be publicly endorsing her.

In the first of two TikToks, which she shared on Tuesday, September 24, the rising star repeated the original Guard quote detailing her “issues” with the government and she apologized to those who “fell for the clickbait.”

“I’ve been encouraging people to use critical thinking skills, learn about what they’re voting for, learn about who they’re voting for and ask questions, and it’s taken completely out of context, as usual,” Roan, 26, began.

“There’s a nuance to what I say in interviews, and I think it’s important for people to think critically,” she said. “I think it’s important for me to question authority and world leaders, to question myself, to question my algorithm, to question whether some person who tweeted something about someone else is even truthful.”

It’s important to question those things, she said, “because I think that’s how we move forward.”

“This is my third election, and the world is changing so fast, and I want to be part of the generation that changes things forever,” the “Casual” artist said. “Because we need it.”

“Actions speak louder than words, and actions speak louder than confirmation,” she added, before repeating the entire quote about the vote he posted The Guardian.

“I have so many problems with our government in every way,” she told the news outlet. “There are so many things I would like to change. So I don’t feel pressured to support someone. There are problems on both sides. I encourage people to use their critical thinking skills, use their voice — vote a little, vote for what’s happening in your city.”

She also said The Guardian that the No. 1 change she wants to see this election year is “trans rights,” adding, “I can’t let cis people make decisions for trans people, period.”

So the singer continued on TikTok: “No, I’m not voting for Trump, and yes, I will always question those in power and those who make decisions for other people. And I will stand up for what is right and what I believe in.”

“I’m sorry you fell for the clickbait,” she finished.

After she “woke up with people fighting each other [her statement] even more,” Roan posted on a follow-up TikTok on Wednesday, September 25 — in which she specifically stated that she would be voting for Harris this November.

“Supporting and voting are completely different,” the musician began. “I don’t agree with a lot of what’s going on with politics. Obviously, f— the policies of the right, but also, f— some of the policies of the left — that’s why I can’t support.”

“That’s why I can’t put my whole name and my whole project behind one,” she added.

In the sequel, “Good luck, baby!” the performer also said that, at least in the 2024 presidential election, “I’m going to settle for the options that are in front of me — and you’re not going to make me feel bad about it.”

“So yeah, I’m voting for f*cking Kamala, but I’m not going along with what’s being offered because it’s questionable,” she said, later ending the video by encouraging her fans to do the same.

“Vote for whoever you think is the best option for what we have right now, because that’s all we can do,” she said.
