Charles Melton is all that and a bag of chips — or Gushers!
In a fun segment for his digital cover with PEOPLE, the 33-year-old May December the actor digs through a box of items from the ’90s and Y2K area, to “see if it triggers nostalgia” for him.
First up are the aforementioned Gushers, a ’90s children’s meal featuring fruity snacks with a sweet, juicy center. “Oh, wow,” Melton says, putting some in his mouth. “I’ve been putting this in the freezer.”
Next? Collection of books from To get chills series, which Melton says he “loved” growing up. Among the included titles are The beast from the east, Ghost camp and Attack of the Jack-O’-Lanternall of which were published in 1996, around the heyday of RL Stine’s books.

After taking a Blockbuster Video membership card out of the box, the actor reveals that he often worked Blockbuster nights, having “often” gone to the now-defunct video store instead of the library as a kid.
“The library arrived maybe, like, a month ago. Just kidding,” says Melton, who earlier in the video shares what he’s currently reading Confidence by Hernan Diaz. (“Two pages!” he jokes.)
One movie close to his heart? A knight’s talewhich he proves when he pulls out a VHS copy of the 2001 medieval action comedy starring the late Heath Ledger.
“When I play this movie, it always makes me happy. I love this movie,” Melton raves, adding with a smile, “I watched this about a week ago.”

Melton also explores the Game Boy Color, Mr. Sketch Scented Markers (a ’90s classroom essential), a portable CD player — and of course, vintage Archie a comic book from the 90s.
Melton played Reggie Mantle RiverdaleThe TV adaptation of the comic book ran for six seasons on The CW, beginning in January 2017. He took over the role of Reggie in Season 2 from Ross Butler and played the character until the series’ end in August 2023.
“What an iconic show to be a part of,” says Melton. “The relationships I built on that show, the people I worked with — it brought so much information that I learned as an actor and it really changed my life. Some of my best friends are on that show.”
“It’s a bittersweet thing,” he adds, joking with a laugh, “Those tears won’t come today in this interview.”
