Charles Melton Says the ‘Best Part’ of Awards Season Has Been His Mom ‘Taking Care’ of Him (Exclusive)

Charles Melton lives a fast life — and relies on the people closest to him for support.

While the 33-year-old actor reflects on the rollercoaster year he’s had thanks to his award-winning role in the Netflix film May Decemberhe admits that without his mom, he would probably be lost.

“The best part was my mom making me breakfast, lunch and dinner and just taking care of me,” he tells PEOPLE while at Vanity Fair and Instagram A Night For Young Hollywood in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

“You don’t sleep that much,” Melton continues about his busy schedule between shoots May December less than a month away and life is now in the middle of awards season. “But along the way, only my sister and mom were there [and] my publicist, whom I love very much.”

Reflecting on the time he spent working on the film alongside his co-stars, he says: “Just being able to have this time with Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and Sammy and Alex and all our producers. It was just amazing to celebrate what we did in Georgia, for those 23 days.”

The actresses showed him the same respect.

“He’s a super interesting person — I mean, he’s a college football player, and then he says, ‘I’m reading about jingle bells as visions of sexual identity and gender identity,’” Portman told PEOPLE of her co-star. “Who are you? I love this! If the new generation is like that, bring it out.”

Moore, who played his on-screen wife in the film, said: “He’s so handsome, and he buried that in this performance. You don’t see it at all. You see a completely different person.”

However, Melton’s support of the Costars cannot match that of his mother Sukyong. “What doesn’t come and go is my family, and they are with me at all times,” he told PEOPLE. “These are the people who love me, with whom I will be on every part of my life’s journey. They tell me the truth.”

His mom is also often his go-to date at industry events because, according to him, “Who wouldn’t want their mom with them?”

“She’ll always tell me, no matter how old I get, I’ll always be her baby Charles: ‘I don’t care if you have a house, if you pay the bills and if you have kids, you’ll always be my baby.’ ”
