Why Bikini Killer Charles Shobhraj released by Nepal Supreme Court?

The notorious French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, a Frenchman with Indian and Vietnamese ancestry who has been imprisoned in Kathmandu since 2003 on murder charges, was ordered to be released on Wednesday by the Supreme Court of Nepal. Supreme Court sources state that a joint bench of justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Tilak Prasad Shrestha ordered the release of 78-year-old Sobhraj from custody.

According to the court’s ruling, the responsible party must make plans for Sobhraj to return to his nation within 15 days. Because of his talent for trickery and evasion, Sobharaj earned the nicknames “the Serpent” and “the Bikini Killer,” and since 2003 he has been imprisoned in Kathmandu for life for the 1975 murder of American Connie Jo Bronzich.

He was given a second life term in 2014 after being found guilty of murdering Canadian traveller Laurent Carriere. In Nepal, a life sentence entails 20 years in prison. The order by the division bench of Nepal’s top court on Wednesday came after Shobraj filed a plea claiming that he was put in prison more than the period recommended for him.

There is a legal provision to release prisoners who have completed 75 per cent jail term and showed good character during imprisonment. Sobhraj stated in his appeal that he had served out his sentence in accordance with “concessions” granted to senior residents of Nepal.

He stated that he had already completed 17 of the 20 years of his sentence and that his recommendation for release for good behaviour had already been made. In August 2003, Sobhraj was apprehended after being seen in a casino in Kathmandu. After a trial, he was given a life sentence for the murder. v

He had been connected to numerous backpacker slayings.  Sobhraj suffered 21 years in prison in India, with just a 22-day reprieve in 1986 when he managed to break out of the maximum security Tihar Jail by drugging the guards he had been feeding sweets to under the pretence of his birthday. In the 1970s, Sobhraj is thought to have killed 15 to 20 individuals.Two of his victims were discovered in bikinis alone. In Asia, he typically charmed Western visitors before drugging and killing them between 1972 and 1976.

Compagnon accepted Sobhraj’s marriage proposal, but he was afterwards detained for attempting to elude police while operating a stolen car. Despite the fact that Chantal supported him the entire time he served his eight-month prison term, he was sentenced to it. Upon Compagnon’s release, Sobhraj and he were married.

In an effort to avoid capture, Sobhraj and a pregnant Compagnon fled France for Asia in 1970. Later that year, Sobhraj arrived in Bombay (Mumbai) after travelling across Eastern Europe with forged documents and robbing travellers they made friends with along the way. Usha, a baby girl, was born to Chantal in the city. Sobhraj continued to live a criminal life in the interim, running a car theft and smuggling business. Growing profits for Sobhraj went into his developing gambling addiction.

As a result of an unsuccessful armed robbery attempt on a jeweller at Hotel Ashoka in 1973, Sobhraj was detained and sent in jail. With Compagnon’s assistance, Sobhraj was able to flee by pretending to be ill, but he was quickly apprehended again. Sobhraj obtained bail from his father by borrowing money, and shortly after, he left to Kabul. There, the duo started to rob travellers on the hippie route until being apprehended once more. As he had done in India, Sobhraj made his getaway by pretending to be ill and giving the hospital guard drugs. Sobhraj broke away from his home and went to Iran. Despite his continued loyalty to Sobhraj, Compagnon decided to put their criminal history behind and went to France, promising to never see him again.

Using as many as ten stolen passports, Sobhraj spent the following two years evading capture. He travelled through a number of Middle Eastern and Eastern European nations. André, Sobhraj’s younger half-brother, joined him in Istanbul. André and Sobhraj joined together to commit numerous crimes in both Greece and Turkey as partners in crime. The two were ultimately taken into custody in Athens. Sobhraj was able to flee after an identity-switch fake failed, but his half-brother remained. André served an 18-year sentence before being turned over to Turkish law enforcement.
