Charli XCX and Lorde Unpack Their Complicated Friendship on Vulnerable 'Girl, So Confusing' Remix

Charli XCX and Lorde are working on a remix.

After Charli sang about a tense, complicated friendship with a fellow pop star on it Brat album’s “Girl, so confusing,” fans speculated she was talking about Lorde — and it seems they were right.

On June 21, the two musicians teamed up for a vulnerable remix of “The girl, so confusing version with lorde,” in which they each reveal their feelings for each other.

The original song finds Charli, 31, wondering how the other musician truly feels about her despite both claiming to be friends. “Yeah, I don’t know if you like me / Sometimes I think you’d hate me / Sometimes I think I’d hate you / Maybe you just wanna be me,” he sings on the first verse.

Full song, released June 7 BratThe “Von Dutch” performer addresses her and Lorde, 27, not being able to continue hanging out and working together, as well as comparing them to each other because they have “the same hair.”

Lorde responds to Charla’s thoughts on the remix, explaining that she didn’t know her actions had such an impact. “Well, honestly, I was speechless / When I woke up to the sound of your voice / You told me how you feel / Let’s work it out on the remix,” she sings.

The “Green Light” performer admits he’s canceled plans in the past because he felt “so lost in his head” and didn’t want to be photographed with Charli because she was struggling with her body image at the time.

“Because for the last few years / I’ve been at war with my body / I’ve been trying to lose weight by starving myself / And then I’ve gained all the weight back,” sings Lorde. “I was trapped in hate / And your life seemed so amazing / I didn’t think for a second / My voice was in your head.”

Later in the Grammy-winner’s verse, she reflects on building defensive traits in her childhood and realizing they still affect her today — to the point where Charli feels rejected because of it.

“She trusted my projection / And now I totally get it / I forgot that inside that icon / There’s still a young girl from Essex,” Lorde’s verse concludes, before they sing the rest of the song.

“I ride for you, Charli,” declares the “Royals” singer before the final chorus.

Throughout their careers, Lorde and Charli have been compared – mostly due to their similar looks and coming into the industry around the same time.

While they’ve praised each other’s music in the past, Charli recently opened up Rolling Stone UK she was “super jealous” of Lorde’s success with “Royals” in 2013.

“You put all these things together in your brain, like, ‘She was into my music. She had big hair; I had big hair. She wore black lipstick; I wore black lipstick once,'” she told the news outlet. “You make these parallels and think, ‘Well, that could have been me.'”

Upon release from Brat earlier this month, Lorde praised the album in an Instagram Story post. “Charli just cooked this differently,” she wrote at the time.

“So much courage, grace and skin in the game. I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honor to be moved, changed and blown away by her work. NOBODY is like this bitch,” she added.
