HH Swamiji’s knowledge and experience was not limited to Jain philosophy alone. He has an MA in History from Mysore University and an MA in Philosophy from Bangalore University. He was a famous scholar of the Prakrit, Sanskrit, and Kannada languages.

In recognition of his selfless service and dedication, HH Swamiji was honored with the title ‘Karmayogi’ by the late Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. Notable achievements of him include organizing the highly successful ‘Dharmachakra’ holy tour of South India and the well organized ‘1000’ ceremony. anniversary of the consecration and anointing of the head (Mahamastakabhisheka)’ of Bhagwan Bahubali. He also oversaw the Free Eye Camp organized at Shravanabelagola which benefited 1000 people.

As an academic, His Holiness Swamiji had excellent public speaking skills and was fluent in Hindi, English and Kannada. His speeches were simple and lucid, making him a sought after speaker in various social organizations including the Vishwa Dharma Shanti Sammelan Samiti (World Religion and Peace Conference Committee).

Along with his spiritual guide, His Holiness Swamiji established several educational institutions including pre-primary, primary and secondary schools, the College of Pharmacy, the PUC College of Science, the College of Engineering, the Polytechnic and the National Institute of Studies and Research. Prakrit. Gommateshwar Vidyapeetha, the institution he founded, produced a number of scholars in religious studies.

HH Swamiji was also deeply involved in various development projects. Under his leadership numerous Dharmashalas and guesthouses were built which provided all the facilities to a large number of tourists and pilgrims. He also started a mobile hospital for the benefit of rural areas and currently an Ayurvedic hospital, an eye hospital and a clinical laboratory are in operation. In addition, ten villages near Shravanabelagola, which were taken over for development, now have schools, drinking water, new tanks, community centers, roads, and public lighting.

Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji, pontiff and head of Shravanabelagola Digamber Jain Mutt passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning after a long illness. He was 74 years old. According to Mutt’s sources, he suffered a heart attack.

Swamiji’s personal attendant found out that he had passed away when he went to wake him up around 5:30 am. Charukeerthi had millions of devotees in India and abroad. He presided over four Mahamastakabhisheks that are held every 12 years. He was the director of Digamber Jain Mutt since 1970. Swamiji has a Master’s Degree in History and Philosophy from the Universities of Mysuru and Bengaluru.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi conferred the “Karmayogi” award on Swamiji when he visited Shravanabelagola to witness the Anointing.

The last rites of Prophet Charukeerthi Bhattarak Swamiji of Shravanabelagola Mutt, who passed away on Thursday, will be performed at Tavarekatta Bolubetta near Chikkabetta in Chandragiri, Shravanabelagola, in the evening. His mortal remains will be kept at Chavundaraya Sabhamantapa at Shravanabelagola Jain Mutt from 12:30 pm for the public to pay their respects to him.

The last rites will be performed in accordance with Jain tradition and with state honours, according to Chief Minister Basaravar Bommai.

Early age and education

Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji was born on May 3, 1949 in Varanga, Karnataka, India. His parents were devout Jains and instilled in him a love of Jainism from an early age. At the age of 12, he renounced the world and became a monk. He received formal education in Jain philosophy and literature from his guru, Vidyasagarji Maharaja.
