Chef Alex Belew talks about his time on Season 21 of Hell’s Kitchen.
Hell’s Kitchen this season is hotter and more dramatic than previous seasons. Many contestants failed to prepare acceptable meals during catering duties and were kicked out of the kitchen by Gordon Ramsay. It’s normal for teams to feel overwhelmed as bets increase after each episode.
Chef Alex Belew spoke about dealing with the pressures of Hell’s Kitchen and meeting the high expectations of Ramsay and his customers. The chef admits that he often has crises in the kitchen, but adds that he depends on his culinary skills to get through difficult situations.
Belew went on to say:
“When that happens, you have to rely on your instincts and nutritional knowledge. What flavors go together, how to prepare certain foods and hope for the best? I had 30 minutes of the 40 minute challenge before I realized what I was doing.”
He continued:
“For those 30 minutes, all I did was cook and organize things that I knew worked. Knowledge and creativity are needed. True innovation doesn’t reveal your source!!”
While others delivered shoddy meals (including spaghetti in boxes) during the first show, Alex Belew got a perfect score from Gordon Ramsay for his fish. However, the team narrowly missed the victory before falling into a chaotic rematch.
The chef is one of the few to get a perfect score. Belew emphasizes the value of optimism in a similar context, saying:
“It was one of the most memorable events of my career. Unfortunately it only lasted about 3 minutes because it was overshadowed by the spaghetti in the box. It was a strange thing to prepare for. I’m a chef. Of course, I’m pissed, but I’ve done my best to stay cheerful. On the first day, it’s too early to go crazy and smoke a pad.”

“Honestly, when he announced this year’s theme, I was one of the last to clap. I’m not impressed at all. I know that my twenties are just getting started and most people my age are in management positions. That’s exactly what I thought!!”
