Cher Remembers Moonstruck Director Norman Jewison After His Death at 97: ‘Lives On Through His Work’

Cher is grieving the loss of an important person in her life and career.

The star of many stripes, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1987 film. Infatuated with the moonhe paid tribute to X (formerly known as Twitter) to the film’s director, Norman Jewison, after his death at the age of 97.

“Goodbye sweet prince👑. Thank you for one of the greatest, happiest and most fun experiences of my life,” the Oscar winner wrote. “Without you, I wouldn’t have my beautiful golden man.”

“Norman U made Moonstruck The GREAT FILM Ppl🩵,” the Grammy winner continued. “The script, actors, etc, NEED YOU DEAR❤️. NORMAN JEWISON. LIVES THROUGH HIS WORK.”

Cher Mourns Death of ‘Amazing’ ‘Moonstruck’ Costar Olympia Dukakis: ‘I Talked to Her 3 Weeks Ago’

Jewison, the prolific director behind other classic films like In the heat of the nightdied Saturday, Jan. 20, at his home in Los Angeles, his publicist Jeff Sanderson confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne St. David, children Kevin, Michael and Jenny, plus grandchildren Ella, Megan, Alexandra, Sam and Henry. Celebrations of life will be held later in Los Angeles and Toronto.

Cher has previously spoken out following the deaths of some of them Infatuated with the moon costars, including Danny Aiello in December 2019.

The two were played by newly engaged couple Loretta Castorini and Johnny Cammareri. When Johnny goes to Italy to visit his dying mother, he asks Loretta to visit his estranged brother Ronny (Nicolas Cage) to tell them of their engagement. When she does, Loretta falls in love with Ronny.

“Goodbye dear #DannyAiello Danny was a great actor but a genius comedic actor. We laughed so much. Making #Moonstruck,” Cher wrote on X (formerly Twitter) at the time. “It was one of the happiest times of my life, and he was apart of that happy time. Goodbye #JohnnyCammareri Loretta.”

She also paid tribute to her beloved on-screen mother, Olympia Dukakis, following her death in 2021. “Olympia Dukakis was an incredible, Oscar-winning actress,” Cher she began her tweet. “Olympia played my mom in Moonstruck, even though her role was a woman who suffers, we 😂 ALL the time.”

“She would tell me how much she loved Louis, her handsome talented husband. I spoke to her 3 weeks ago. Rip dear,” Cher concluded.
