Chhagan started his political career in the Shiv Sena party. He left the party in 1991 and joined the Indian National Congress. Later, when Indian National Congress leader Sharad Pawar decided to leave the Congress and form his own party, the National Congress Party, Bhujbal went with him.
Throughout his partnership, Bhujbal maintained constant contact and interaction with his constituency and its neighbourhoods. He was later elected as the Mayor of Mumbai twice.
He was one of the earliest MPs of the Shiv Sena, first elected from Mazgaon in 1985 and again in 1990. Bhujbal contested the 2014 general elections from Nashik constituency and lost to Shiv Sena’s Hemant Godse.
He is currently a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Yeola constituency and has been in office since 2004.
