ChiefsAholic Arrested

It was recently reported that a Kansas man, known for his signature full wolf costume at Kansas City Chiefs games, was arrested in California after removing an ankle monitor while out on bail on bank robbery charges. The arrest came after an extensive three-month manhunt for the fugitive, according to federal authorities.

The person in question, Xaviar Michael Babudar, age 28 and popularly known as ChiefsAholic among fans of the 2023 Super Bowl champions, was taken into custody in Lincoln, California. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri confirmed the arrest. Babudar, a resident of Overland Park, Kansas, disappeared in late March after posting bail following his December arrest on suspicion of robbing a credit union in Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

Details revealed in a recently unsealed criminal complaint show that prior to his arrest, Babudar traveled to various locations throughout the Midwest, allegedly committing a series of bank and credit union robberies. Federal authorities further accuse him of laundering stolen proceeds through casino and bank accounts. The criminal complaint specifically charges him with bank theft and interstate transportation of stolen property.

Specifically, the complaint alleges that Babudar targeted the Great Western Bank in Clive, Iowa, in March 2022, making off with nearly $70,000 in cash, which he then transported to Missouri. As the investigation progresses, additional charges could be filed against him. Babudar first appeared in court in California, where the proceedings were described as largely procedural by his appointed public defender, Hannah Labaree.

The case will now go to a grand jury, which will decide whether to indict him on federal charges related to the Iowa incident or any other charges if deemed necessary. Prior to his arrest, Babudar gained attention when ESPN.com published an extensive story on him, noting his presence as a regular at Chiefs tailgates and games.

Wearing his gray wolf suit, he has amassed a significant following on his ChiefsAholic Twitter account. However, the FBI affidavit states that during this time, Babudar was involved in a series of bank and credit union robberies throughout the Midwest. To launder the ill-gotten gains, he allegedly bought and redeemed casino chips in Kansas, Missouri and Illinois, while also funding his own bank accounts.

The affidavit reveals that the robberies resulted in the theft of over $845,000 from six different financial institutions, approximately $70,000 of which came from a bank in Iowa. Authorities were able to recover $163,560, stained in red, right after one of the robberies. According to the affidavit, Babudar deposited about $70,000 into his credit union money market account between March and April 2022.

However, in April, he allegedly withdrew $68,000 and received $65,000 in deposits from casinos, according to court documents. The statement also claims that between April and December 2022, Babudar purchased more than $1.1 million in casino chips and redeemed a slightly smaller amount.

In an attempt to determine a legitimate source of income, FBI Special Agent Cameron Smith states in an affidavit that Babudar has reported no wages in Kansas since 2018 and none in any other state since October 2021. The FBI’s investigation includes cellphone records that Babudar is placed close to the scene of the robberies, as well as the discovery of gloves in his vehicle that appear to match the ones he wore during the crimes.
