Chris Davidson, a famous surfer, died on September 24, 2022, at the age of 45, after being involved in a fight outside a bar on the north-central coast of New South Wales. Kelly Slater, Davidson’s longtime rival, paid tribute to him in an Instagram story, writing:
“Another soldier died yesterday. #RipChrisDavo. I had some good fights with that guy. One of the most naturally gifted surfers I’ve ever met.”
While tweeting about Chris’ death, Mark Windon, CEO of Surfing NSW, described him as a “bigger figure than a real person”.
Cause of death of Chris Davidson
Chris Davidson was killed after he was allegedly assaulted in a rural pub in New South Wales, Australia. At around 11pm on September 24, Davidson got into a fight with a man named Hrant Coleman, after which Davidson fell and injured his head on the concrete. Police responded to a complaint at the Sportsman’s Way bar in South West Rocks, and when they arrived, Davidson was found unconscious on the ground. Paramedics arrived by ambulance and took Chris to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.
Coleman was arrested early Sunday morning at his home in South West Rocks. According to the Daily Telegraph, Grant is the brother of NSW Waratahs head coach Darren Coleman. The 42-year-old man was charged with causing the death. He appeared at Port Macquarie bail court the same day and was denied.

Each website gives a different date of birth for Chris Davidson. Some say 1976, while others say 1977. In the early 1990s, he was a member of the Finding Rip Curl group and the surf magazine Tracks named him one of the athletes. The best surfer in the world at the time.
He started his career at the age of 19 and got the wildcard for Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Davidson previously beat Kelly Slater in the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Portugal, and was ranked 14th in the world in surfing that year. After that, he retired from professional surfing.
He has represented Australia at many international competitions, including the 2009 Billabong Pro in Spain. He made it to the final, but lost.
