Chris Duarte started playing basketball at the age of thirteen. His family moved to New York, and he spent his junior and senior years of high school with them. Similarly, in 2017, he competed in the Jordan Brand Classic regional game. He graduated from high school as the fifth best player in New York. Several colleges and universities offered him scholarships, but he decided to play for Western Kentucky.
Chris enrolled at Northwest Florida State College and became a member of the basketball team. As a freshman, he averaged 12.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and two steals in 23.3 minutes per game. At the end of the season, he was named first team All-Panhandle Conference and helped his team reach the Elite Eight round of the NJCAA Division I Championship.
Continuing, he stated that he intended to attend the University of Oregon his freshman year before starting his sophomore year. He averaged 19 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game as a sophomore. He was also named the Panhandle Player of the Year by the media and coaches. Furthermore, he then transferred to Oregon, where he made his first collegiate appearance against Fresno State. He was named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week. The basketball player finished the season with an average of 12.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.

On November 5, 2019, he made his Oregon debut against Fresno State. On December 29, he set a junior season high with 31 points, shooting 12 of 15 from the field and 6 of 9 from three. Duarte led the Ducks to the 2020–2021 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament Sweet Sixteen. On April 3, 2021, he was named the winner of the 2021 Jerry West Award as the best shooting guard in men’s college basketball. In addition, he was named the AP Pac-12 Player of the Year and an AP Third Team All-American.
