Chris Kattan Dishes on Wedding Plans After Upgrading Elopement to a ‘Medium-Sized Ceremony’ (Exclusive)

Chris Kattan and fiancee Maria Libri share details about their upcoming wedding.

While attending U2’s new Las Vegas residency at The Sphere on Friday night, Saturday night live alum, 52, and his bride-to-be spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about their nuptials, which they said were originally meant to be elopements.

“It started as an elopement, and now it’s a medium-sized ceremony,” Libri said, as Kattan explained, “It was her idea. It’s romantic. It means you want to commit.”

The duo now plans to exchange “I dos” next summer in Chicago, where they live and where they got engaged. “My dad was born there and his ashes were spread there,” Kattan said. And while they are still working out the details of their wedding, the comedian noted that he will be going through his contacts to find a singer for the wedding. “Maybe we’ll have a friend, a guest musician, play,” he explained. “We have a couple in mind who might do the favor, we hope.”

Chris Kattan is engaged to girlfriend Marija Libri: ‘Life gives you gifts when you’re not looking’ (exclusive)

Kattan and Libri got engaged in March when the actor proposed to them at a Wilco concert in Chicago.

“Maria and I completely accept each other for who we are,” Kattan told PEOPLE exclusively at the time. “It’s not just the things we have in common, we also accept our quirks and differences – and we don’t love each other in spite of them, we love each other because of them.”

“When I saw her and spent time together a few months after we first met, and realized that our creative brains were also completely aligned (after the first skit we did together), that’s when I knew I was in trouble!” he continued. – Fortunately for me, she felt the same.

Libri, meanwhile, recalled how the pair shared an instant connection after she interviewed Kattan in Springfield, Illinois, while he was on tour for a comedy show more than a year and a half ago.

– It’s funny how life sometimes works and gives you gifts when you don’t ask for them – said the former journalist, now a screenwriter and actor. “When we met, we were instantly comfortable with each other. Call it weird, mystical, or magical, it’s like we knew each other in a past life. After spending that first day together (though I didn’t know how), I just I kind of knew my life would never be the same after I met Chris.”
