Early Life and Education

Susan Licht and Dr. Peter Licht of Newtown, Connecticut are the parents of Licht. Having earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and broadcast journalism from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1993, he is a journalist. At Syracuse’s Dick Clark Studios and Alan Gerry Centre for Media Innovation, one of the TV news control rooms was renamed in his honour in 2014.

Career

At KNBC in Los Angeles, Licht started his career during the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. He also collaborated with regional NBC stations in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas.

He joined MSNBC in 2005 as the executive producer of Scarborough Country, and later served as the show’s first executive producer. He and host Joe Scarborough collaborated on the show’s conception before its debut in 2007.

He was appointed vice president of programming at CBS News after joining CBS in 2011. From the time CBS This Morning debuted in 2012 until joining The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2016, Licht served as the program’s executive producer.

He was in charge of CBS This Morning at the time, and he is credited with turning the programme into an unexpected hit that propelled CBS to its most competitive position in the morning show race in nearly 30 years. This accomplishment was made possible in part by Licht letting the show’s hosts, Norah O’Donnell, Charlie Rose, and Gayle King, freely discuss both themselves and current events.

The Late Show attracted its largest weekly audience since February 19 of that year a month after he was named executive producer and showrunner. In his role as executive producer, he concentrated on management concerns that had previously been handled by host Stephen Colbert. He also shortened the opening titles and added a comedy sketch just before them.

On February 26, 2022, Licht was named Zucker’s replacement following the surprise resignation of CNN President Jeff Zucker in February 2022.

Awards

CBS This Morning received a Peabody Award, a Daytime Emmy Award, and three News & Documentary Emmy Awards while Licht served as executive producer. He was a co-nominee for three 2015 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast, Outstanding Feature Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast, and Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast while serving as the executive producer of CBS This Morning. The series won an Emmy the following year for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast for a report on pharmacy fraud that he and Steve Capus co-executively produced.

Personal Life

On April 28, 2010, Licht experienced a cerebral haemorrhage that almost claimed his life as he was travelling in a Cadillac Escalade to a hotel in Washington, D.C. What I Learned When I Almost Died: How a Maniac TV Producer Put Down His BlackBerry and Started to Live His Life, which was published in 2011, is a book he later authored about the incident. Then-vice-president Joe Biden, who himself had survived an aneurysm, made a cold call to Licht’s highly regarded neurosurgeon, Dr. Vivek Deshmukh, to arrange for his care.

He was a Manhattan resident as of 2017 along with his wife Jenny Blanco and their two sons. Jenny spent numerous years at CNN, first as an Anderson Cooper producer and later as the director of talent acquisition and development. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, when they were both working on assignments, Licht and she started dating. They were wed in April 2006 at the L’Auberge Del Mar in Del Mar, California.
