Chris Pratt wasn’t worried about following Bill Murray as Garfield.
An actor who voices a legendary cartoon character The movie Garfieldrecently spoke with MovieWeb about taking on the role some 20 years after Bill Murray first voiced him on the big screen in 2004. Garfield: The Movie.
“Well, of course, he’s the GOAT. He’s the Mount Rushmore of my comedy,” Pratt, 44, said when asked if he felt nervous about taking on the role that Murray, 73, originated on the big screen.
“I would [been nervous]but [director Mark Dindal] he let me know very early on that his vision for the sound of this character, the voice he always heard coming out of this animation he’d been working on for years before I even met him, was my voice.”
“He said, ‘I want it to sound like you. You have a natural sarcastic kind of laziness about your voice that really suits this character,'” Pratt added of the director’s vision for the animated film. Garfield movie.
“And I thought, hell, that makes it look easy. That’s easy — I’m not going to go in and try to do anything other than just be myself and breathe my own spirit into the role.”

Pratt is no stranger to voice acting, having voiced the legendary video game character Mario in 2023. Movie Super Mario Bros and leads into 2014 The LEGO Movie and Pixar’s Forward in 2020

The movie Garfield also features Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, Samuel L. Jackson and Bowen Yang in the voice cast.
The film follows Garfield and dog Odie as they meet Garfield’s father Vic (Jackson, 75) and are “forced from their perfectly pampered lives to join Vic in a hilarious high-stakes heist,” according to the synopsis.

Pratt posed with Garfield Comic book creator Jim Davis at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on May 19. While speaking with MovieWeb recently about the voice role, Pratt said he was happy to hear Davis, 78, approve of his performance as Garfield.
“I’ve heard secondhand now that he gave me a 10 out of 10. I heard that about two hours ago and I was surprised at how moving it was,” he said. “I guess I didn’t really recognize the pressure I put on myself to make sure he was happy, and hearing that he was happy really touched me.”
The movie Garfield it’s in theaters now.
