Christina Ricci Talks Working with Cher in 1990's Mermaids, Her First Film: ‘Every Good Thing You Believe About Cher Is True’

Sometimes superstars are also super people.

Christina Ricci opened up about working with Cher while filming her first movie on the Wednesday, November 13, episode The Drew Barrymore Show. Ricci, 44, and Barrymore, 49, discussed their recent appearances in the Demi Lovato documentary Child staras well as their past as young actors. Ricci started working as an actress when she was only 7 years old, and at the age of 9 she made her first film: in 1990. sirens which starred Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder, Michael Schoeffling and Cher.

“She’s the best,” Ricci told Barrymore of the 78-year-old “Believe” singer. “Honestly, every good thing you believe about Cher is true. It’s really amazing. I mean, she was so wonderful.”

Ricci recalled that when she felt confused on the film set, she “took the time to explain everything to me.” She also answered all the young star’s questions about acting. “I remember saying one time, she had to cry in a scene and she was doing the whole thing and she had headphones on, and I said, ‘How do you cry?’ And she explained her process to me.” Ricci noted that as actresses, she and Barrymore know that the day you have to cry on camera, “There’s a lot of pressure, there’s a lot of weight. You don’t want to talk to anybody, blah, blah.”

“And she took the time to take off her headphones and just say, ‘Well, here’s what I’m doing.’ She was really amazing,” Ricci said. The Addams Family the star also appeared in the music video for Cher’s “The Shoop Shoop Song,” which appeared on the film’s soundtrack.

IN sirensCher played the single mother of the characters Ryder and Ricci, who all struggle after moving to Massachusetts. Ricci’s character, Kate, is a competitive swimmer, and Ricci won a Young Artist Award for the film.

In October, Ricci spoke with PEOPLE about her career as a young actress, which has included roles in Casper, Now and Then and Sleepy Hollowas well as her iconic role as Wednesday Addams in two films. “I feel like I got lucky,” Ricci said. “I was lucky as a young man at the time [with] where our culture should have played really interesting roles, interesting young girls and then interesting women.”

Ricci’s roles were often introspective and included a mystical element. “I wasn’t really able to play the other kind of woman that was available or the other kind of girl that they were writing for,” she said. “So I feel like I was lucky that there were opportunities and parts and roles.”
