Christopher Nolan Praises How Taylor Swift Released Her Eras Tour Movie: ‘Incredibly Valuable’

Nolan, 53, recently praised Swift, 33, for bypassing the studios to work directly with AMC Theaters in distribution Eras Tour concert film, trans The Hollywood Reporter.

“Taylor Swift is about to show the studios, because her concert film isn’t being distributed by the studios, it’s being distributed by the theater owner, AMC, and she’s going to make a ton of money,” Nolan said during an Oct. 11 talk at the City University of New York, as the paper reported. The interview was conducted before the film was shown in record numbers on October 13.

“And this is the thing, this is the format, this is the way of seeing things and sharing stories, or sharing experiences, it’s incredibly valuable,” Oppenheimer added the filmmaker. “And if they don’t want it, someone else will. So that’s the truth.”

Nolan, whose recent film dealt with the life of Manhattan Project physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer, appeared alongside his wife and producing partner Emma Thomas at the event. The official CUNY description of the event describes it as a conversation with Kai Bird, the author who wrote the biography Oppenheimer Based on, American Prometheusas the group talked about “the challenges of turning a complicated history into a film.”

“Anytime a movie succeeds that isn’t expected to succeed, it’s an encouraging thing for Hollywood… It’s an encouraging thing for filmmakers,” Nolan said during the event, per THR. “There’s always a tension in Hollywood between what’s known and what’s predicted to make money, which is the meat and potatoes of how studios stay in business, but there’s always that desire [among] audience for something new, something fresh.”

Nolan’s three hours Oppenheimer made its mark on Hollywood as it grew into the highest-grossing biopic since its July release. Meanwhile, over at Swift Eras Tour grossed $92.8 million at the box office after its release last Friday, dominating the domestic box office and instantly becoming the highest-grossing debut ever for a concert film, according to AMC Theatres.

“Every time a film that is not expected to succeed, we have greatly exceeded our highest expectations for the project [Oppenheimer], that’s encouraging for everybody,” Nolan said during a recent speech at CUNY. “It’s encouraging for studios and filmmakers. That tension, that reality… between commerce and art, that formula never changes in Hollywood, because it’s just the reality of the industrial process. Movies are very expensive to make.”
