Ciara reflects on the moment she knew it was time to end things with her ex Future.
While appearing in the last episode Call her dad podcast, the “Level Up” singer, 37, explained that the realization came gradually.
“It’s almost like your taste buds change,” she told host Alex Cooper, trans Party tonight. “Also sometimes you have to look in the mirror and think about yourself, like things I could do differently in my life? I’m looking for a change, but what does that mean?”
Ciara said becoming a mother changed things for her. She and Future – who started dating in 2012 and later got engaged – had son Future Zahir in May 2014 before calling it quits the same year.

“When you have a child, that’s very important to me, it’s not a time to play,” she explained. “Now I’m responsible for another life, so what do I do, how do I think about it?”
“I want joy. I want to make sure my cup is full,” she told Cooper of what she’s looking for in a relationship, before adding her time with Future, “When you’re tired, you’re tired and no one wants to be tired all the time .”
“These are the things that come to my mind when I’m processing, when I was working on a pivotal moment in my life,” she added.

While Ciara and Future, 39, continue to raise their son together, their relationship remains troubled. The rapper appears to have hit out at Wilson, 34, on his July single “Turn Yo Clic Up”. In the second verse of the song, he raps, “I got it out the field / F— Russell,” appearing to refer to the Denver Broncos quarterback.

In 2019, Future also took aim at Russell while appearing on FREEBANDZ RADIO presents: THE WIZRD show, accusing the athlete of not stopping Ciara from attacking him on social media.
“He’s not the man in that position,” he said at the time. “He didn’t tell her ‘Cool it on the Internet. Don’t even talk to him. I’m your husband! You better not even mention the name of the Future!’ If it was me, she wouldn’t even mention his name. She knows that. She wouldn’t even mention the names of her exes.”

Last month, Ciara opened up about her co-parenting dynamic with Future during an interview with Shade room‘s Thembi Mawema, and seemed to hint that the situation was dire.
“How is co-parenting for you?” Mawema asked, making Ciara burst out laughing.
Mawema joined in the laughter and said, “I’m dead,” reacting to Ciara’s unexpected answer to her question.
Over the years, Future has publicly made numerous unflattering accusations against Ciara, including that she is preventing him from seeing their son. In a series of tweets in 2020, he also accused the Grammy winner of having “control issues” and claimed he paid her “15k a month” in child support.
At the time, a source told PEOPLE that Ciara believed her ex-fiancé was stirring up drama to “promote his music by staying in the press using her name.”
“He is not paying nor has he ever paid $15,000 in child support. That’s just not true,” the source added. “Ciara never prevented him from seeing his child.”
