Cillian Murphy Is ‘Definitely’ Returning for Peaky Blinders Movie After His Oscar Win, Says Creator

Thomas Shelby will return for Pointed glasses movie.

Series creator Steven Knight told the UK outlet Birmingham World on Tuesday, star Cillian Murphy — who recently took home his first Oscar — will reprise his role in the upcoming film.

“He’s definitely coming back for it,” Knight, 64, said of Murphy, 47. “We’re shooting it in September a little down the road in Digbeth [England].”

He also praised Murphy’s performance in the Oppenheimertelling the publication that the best actor Oscar he won earlier this month “was well deserved.”

“I mean, he’s brilliant, and he’s such a great human being and he runs the line when we shoot and he’s so composed and direct. He deserves everything he gets,” Knight said.

The action takes place in Birmingham, England Pointed glasses the show followed the Shelby family, who ran a criminal enterprise that established itself as a major player in the city’s illegal bootlegging and betting after World War I.

The series ran for six seasons, from 2013 to 2022, and starred Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders. Other cast members included Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Anya Taylor-Joy and Finn Cole.

The knight previously said Diversity 2021 that the film is in “development”. He then added, “It’s a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle and end. And I think it will be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far.”

In December 2023, the creator gave another exciting update for fans, saying Radio Times magazine of Pointed glasses film, “The plan is to start shooting it in the middle of next year.”

Meanwhile, Murphy’s first Oscar came for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer. The film also won Nolan Best Picture and Best Director, among other accolades.

In his acceptance speech, Murphy thanked longtime collaborator Nolan, 53, the Academy and others, admitting he felt “a little overwhelmed” by the honor.

“It’s been the craziest, most exciting, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on in 20 years. I owe you more than I can say,” he continued. “Thanks a lot [to] every single crew member, every single cast member Oppenheimer; you brought me out. All my fellow nominees, I continue to be in awe of you. Truly.”

The Irish actor went on to thank his “amazing team” and family, including wife of nearly 20 years Yvonne McGuinness and their sons Malachy, 18, and Aran, 16, who were in the crowd. “I love you so much and I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,” he said.
