Despite his busy schedule as an Oscar-nominated actor, Cillian Murphy still has plenty of time for his sons: Malachy and Aran.
The Pointed glasses star married his long-term partner Yvonne McGuinness in 2004, and the couple welcomed their first son, Malachy, the following year. They expanded their family again in 2007 when their son Aran was born.
Murphy and McGuinness worked hard to give their boys a normal private childhood, despite their father appearing in major projects such as dark Knight, Beginning and Oppenheimer. The BAFTA winner seems to think their hard work paid off.
“I don’t know, they seem to be better adjusted than me. More confident in himself,” Murphy said Guard 2016. “I’m happy about it. For me, that was something that took a long time to understand: that it’s okay to be you, that it’s okay to be an individual.”

Murphy also said he was proud of the people who became his children.
“They’re really good guys. We laugh – he said Rolling Stone UK in 2023, Malachy and Aran even sometimes enjoy watching Murphy movies. “We don’t do ‘Dad’s Movie Night,’ but they like some of my movies. They say that all my films are real intensively,” he added.

Murphy and McGuinness first became parents in 2005 when they welcomed their eldest son, Malachy.
Although Murphy’s career began to take off around this time thanks to the success of his thriller Red eyehe made sure to keep his family out of the limelight and not talk about his children.
Their second son, Aran, was born in 2007.
Family time is key for Murphy
The Dunkirk The actor is far less interested in fame than acting, so he was not ready to give up a quiet life with his family in exchange for the glitz and glamor of Hollywood.
“I don’t need to live in Los Angeles,” Murphy told PEOPLE in 2005. “I’d be so far away from my family — I’d never see them.”
That’s why Murphy was so enthusiastic about the opportunity to continue working The wind that shakes the barley while McGuinness was pregnant with Malachy — because it was filmed near his home.
“I lived at home with my folks,” he said Guard 2006 “My wife was pregnant with our son and we were running around the hills of West Cork shooting the Black and Tans. Fantastic!”

Murphy is grateful to McGuinness for being so hands-on with Arana and Malachy so he can continue acting.
“That work-life balance thing is tough,” he said GQ 2019. “I have a great wife and I couldn’t do this without her and her understanding.”
The Oppenheimer the star continued: “But it’s a struggle. I think it’s for any dad who’s job takes away, which it generally does, and who spends it, which my job does.”
They grew up in London before moving to Dublin

The 28 days later the actor and McGuinness spent 14 years living in London, where the boys spent most of their childhood before moving to their parents’ native Ireland in 2015. Murphy says he sold Malachy and Aran on the idea of moving to Dublin with the promise of getting them a dog.
“I loved living in London in my 20s and 30s, but after a while you kind of go, ‘Okay, is this it? Is this it for the rest of my days? Or is there another possibility?’ ” He said Guard.
Not only did he want to return to his Irish roots, but Murphy longed for a quieter place to raise his children, who now enjoy living by the sea.
They have a different accent than their father
Murphy said his sons’ accents had changed a bit since moving to Dublin – which the actor was happy about as he and McGuinness “wanted to be Irish”.
“It’s amazing how quickly their accents have adapted,” Murphy said Guard. “Even within a year of coming back, they’re getting more and more into this raunchy West British kind of thing. Which will hopefully get them lots of girlfriends when they’re 15,” he joked.
They are his biggest fans and source of support

Murphy is extremely grateful for the support of Malachy and Aran, and took multiple opportunities to express his gratitude to them while accepting the awards.
When Murphy was presented with the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, he gave a special shout-out to his family.
“Because I never do this too often, I want to thank my family,” he said over the phone.
“Two-thirds of them are sitting downstairs. We had to leave one at home for exams,” he added. “But just thanks for putting up with me – you put up with half of me and the shadow me and the absent me, the rest of me when I’m doing a movie like this or working in general. You’re always there. I like me. So thanks, guys.”

Murphy also paid tribute to his family when he won best actor at the 2024 Golden Globes. “To my family, I’m the luckiest man and I love you,” he said. Aran made a rare appearance at the event, sitting at a table with his mom, dad and Robert Downey Jr.
Murphy wanted to raise his boys to be compassionate people
It is very important for Batman begins actor that his sons are kind and empathetic human beings — Murphy even set an example for them as a spokesperson for a UNESCO program aimed at ensuring empathy is taught in schools.
“Raising boys, it seems very practical and sensible to promote empathy,” he said Guard in 2022. “It’s about listening, and the best acting is also about listening. If you listen to someone, you can respond to them emotionally.”
Aran is following in his father’s acting footsteps

Both Malachy and Aran had a very private upbringing, but Aran decided to pursue an acting career like his father. At 11, he started a world tour playing Hamnet in a theater play about Shakespeare’s only son. He performed in Great Britain, New York, Boston and Hong Kong.
Murphy was extremely proud of his boy, who he described as “so chilled” about the whole thing. “He would come off the stage and ask what the score was in the game against Liverpool,” Murphy said Guard in 2021. “And you’re a little jealous of that again! There is a danger that over-analyzing everything can distort the simplicity.”
Aran dived into the world of cinema in the 2022 film Lola by the side WarlockEmma Appleton, but his biggest break so far has been announced in 2024. Deadline announced in February of that year that Aran would star in Taiko Waititi’s film Clara and the sun along with Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams.
