The family came into contact with a “corrosive substance” – believed to be acid – and were rushed to hospital, the weather police said.

Chilling footage shows the suspect running around the car and jumping in – before appearing to crash into the person standing in front of him.

The video then shows citizens rushing to surround the car after it crashed into a parked motorcycle.

Sky News, which obtained the footage, reports that it shows a man pulling the child out of the car and slamming him to the ground.

Three bystanders who tried to help the mother and her children were also injured – along with three police officers.

The attack is believed to have followed a collision – and the suspect is still on the run this morning.

A local who saw the aftermath of the attack said he saw a pair of baby shoes lying on the floor next to the abandoned car.

He said: “I saw acid on the ground and two babies on the floor.

“The car was in the middle of the road with the door open.

“Mom and the neighbors heard a very nasty scream. I just saw children’s shoes on the ground.”

Another resident said the victims ran back to the hotel where they were treated on a sofa in the reception area.

“Residents are worried that this was a random guy who threw acid, there are parents with children on this street, they are very worried about it, but they don’t need to.”

She added that the building where the tenants lived at the end of the road was owned by Lambeth Council and full of Afghan refugees.

Another neighbour, Ian Hutchieson, said: “I came back and saw a full cordon in place.

The Canadian added: “Just an hour ago I was at dinner reminiscing about how great it is to live in London.”

The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said the mother and children were in a white car with the man before the pair got out and started fighting in the street.

The man then returned to the car “and tried to run over the woman.”

She said: “There was a little girl banging on the door on the man’s side, the woman was crying shouting ‘my eyes, the police’.”

“He opened the door, took out the baby and hit the ground twice, I’m talking about a strong hit”.

It is unclear when the “corrosive substance” was used.

Another bystander came to the mother’s aid.

He said: “Mum was on the ground, so obviously people came out and tried to comfort her and calm her down.

“But as far as moving her, she was in some kind of pain so every time we moved her, she was crying.”
