He became famous around the world with his roles in the films “Matlock”, “Walker, Texas Ranger” and “Die Hard”. He made his film debut as Junior Lieutenant Marcus “Sundown” Williams in 1986’s “Top Gun” and on television as Frank Simpson / The Student in two episodes of “Diff’rent Strokes” in 1981.

Clarence was the son of Barbara and Clarence Darnell Gilyard Sr., an officer in the United States Air Force. He was the second of six children of his parents and had five siblings. He was raised primarily Lutheran before converting to Catholicism in the 1990s.
During his adolescence he lived in the San Bernardino suburb of Rialto, California, and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1974. He played football in college and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He received a tennis scholarship, but dropped out before graduating. After that, he graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in acting and worked as a waiter looking for acting opportunities. He graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
