Clarke Peters is a professional actor. Peters’ older brother helped him get a job as a costume designer for the 1971 Paris production of Hair, in which he later starred. While there, Peters received a letter from the FBI accusing him of evading the draft. Peters moved to London in 1973 and changed his name to Clarke Peters due to the fact that Equity already had several members of the same name.
While living in London, he formed The Majestics, a soul band, and worked as a backing singer on Joan Armatrading’s “Love and Affection”, Heatwave’s “Boogie Nights” and several David Essex songs. On the other hand, Peters was not interested in music and wanted a job in the theater.
His first West End musical roles were in I Gotta Shoe (1976) and Bubbling Brown Sugar (1977), which he got with the help of his friend Ned Sherrin (1977). His other West End credits include Blues in the Night, Porgy and Bess, The Witches of Eastwick, Chicago and Chess. In Sean Connery’s space film Western Outland (1981), Peters played the ruthless Sgt. Ballard, and played Anderson in an almost speechless role. After collaborating with Sherrin on numerous revues, Peters created Five Guys Named Moe in 1990, which received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. His next venture was Unforgettable, a musical about Nat King Cole.
Peters also worked as a stage actor on Broadway. He was nominated for a Theater World Award for his portrayal of the Iceman in The Iceman Cometh (1999).
