Insiders say the film, which is due to start production next year, would be the perfect tribute to original writer Kay Mellor, who died last May aged 71.
A source said: “James and Ruth back on screen is the reunion everyone wants, although not Gavin and Stacey. The cast was approached about filming the film version – an early script has been written and is ready.
“If given the go-ahead, James will reprise his role as Jamie Rymer, while Ruth will reprise her role as Kelly Chadwick.
“The film would also be a great tribute to Kay who helped change the lives of many actors. Everyone would love to do something to thank her for her brilliance. It’s still early, but a very exciting project.”
Actress Gaynor Faye, who played Lauren Harris, said she would also participate. She told Channel 4’s Steph McGovern’s Packed Lunch: “We’re rethinking the characters and it’s really exciting. I hope to record it next year.”
Fat Friends was set in Leeds and ran for four series from 2000 to 2005. James, 45, previously said his role in the show propelled him to stardom.
Speaking about Kay, James said: “She changed my life when she gave me the role. She saw something in me that no one had before. She gave many people their first chances.”
