Colin Manock News

Dr. Colin Manock, who served as South Australia’s top forensic pathologist for 27 years, is the subject of episode 5 of Australian Crime Stories, which airs on Nine and is streamable on 9Now. The episode is hosted by Adam Shand.

The technique used in this episode of Australian Crime Stories raises doubts about some findings, according to Shand.

Since the birth of young Joshua Nottle in 1992, there have been questions. Shortly after the newborn boy’s birth, his mother Julieanne and father Sean McClusky separated, but he was still a healthy and content child.

It was challenging for Nottle and McClusky to share a home with Nottle’s new partner and another couple while they continued to live together.

Because Nottle was the family’s main provider and was working 12-hour shifts at sporadic hospitality jobs, she wasn’t always at home to watch over Joshua.

Joshua was sadly discovered in his cot on the morning of August 17, 1993, cold and unresponsive. He was rushed to Modbury Hospital, where he was formally pronounced dead. Joshua’s injuries included spine injuries, two cracked ribs, substantial bruising all over his body, and spinal injuries.

When Victoria Police arrived at the Nottle residence and saw the severity of the baby’s injuries, they detained McClusky on suspicion of assault. Joshua’s death constituted a homicide, hence an autopsy was required.

Dr. Colin Manock presided over the boy’s autopsy and came to the conclusion that bronchopneumonia, or a severe cough brought on by lung infection, was the cause of death despite the fact that the infant had displayed so many physical injuries.

When two other babies in the neighbourhood passed away about the same time that Joshua did, there was suspicion of domestic violence and murder. These newborns were also taken to Dr. Manock, who came to the same conclusion: bronchopneumonia, according to Shand.

The other infants had many fractures, fractured bones, lacerations, and bruises when they first arrived. One writer who has followed Dr. Manock’s career said of one child, “The injuries were so severe, he looked like he was the victim of an awful road accident.”

Doctors who had seen the results of the autopsy at the hospital were so horrified by them that they demanded an investigation into the deaths of these youngsters, which eventually happened.
