Colman Domingo details on his unique red carpet accessory.
On Saturday, October 19, the 54-year-old actor once again proved his fashion prowess at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Gala in Los Angeles. The Oscar nominee appeared in a black dressing gown-style jacket teamed with a white collared shirt and red trousers, but the tailored Valentino look was all about the details.
Along with black lace gloves and an array of rings and bracelets, Domingo carried a small purse in the shape of a white cat. At the 25th annual Newport Beach Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 20, the actor told PEOPLE all about the playful accessory.
Without it, he said, he would look “just a man in a suit.”
“I thought it was fun and a conversation starter,” Domingo said of the bag. “I like to stand and talk to someone, and they finally notice that I have a cat. They ask, ‘What is that?’ I said, ‘It’s actually a bag, and I could keep a few things in there.'”

The Euphoria the actor also revealed what he wore that evening. “I kept my ID and $20 because you never know if you need $20 for whatever reason,” he said. “And it was a custom Valentino… so I just wanted to have fun.”

Domingo added that the item was modeled after Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette.

The fourth annual gala also drew stars like Demi Moore, Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Pamela Anderson and Kim Kardashian.
The event kicked off a celebration of Kardashian’s birthday, who turns 44 on Monday, October 21. On the red carpet, the reality star wore a vintage Thierry Mugler 1998 plunging white bodysuit with a corset, a long white robe, nude leggings and perspex heels. Her hair was styled in Hollywood waves and she wore a Tiffany diamond necklace and matching rings.
