Incendiary explosive devices and radioactive material were reportedly found along with Nazi memorabilia and other extremist material.

However, investigators stressed that they found no plans for a bombing or a target.

Local police first raided the home in Bedfordshire where the suspect lives with his parents on bank holiday Monday.

The immediate area was evacuated, a bomb disposal unit arrived, and later a controlled explosion was carried out in a nearby field.

The man – described as a loner with Asperger’s Syndrome – was arrested on suspicion of possessing an item useful to a terrorist.

He was released on bail while police in protective suits continued to search the property.

The suspect was re-arrested on Tuesday “following the discovery of further suspicious substances”.

Bedfordshire Police said: “We can confirm that we are working with SO15, the Metropolitan Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command, who have taken over the investigation.”

The suspect was taken to London for questioning.

The police also seized computer devices and are investigating his past.

His mother told the villagers that he collected chemicals as a hobby.

One said: “They are a nice family and his mother put something on the village Facebook page about how she collects chemicals.

“Allegedly, the son kept everything in the garden house, and she knew nothing about it. She was adamant that it had nothing to do with terrorism and stressed that the police were just being cautious.

“The woman is very worried about her son and hopes he will come home soon.”

Neighbors of the man said he was a loner who rarely went out and often wore a gray hoodie to cover his face.

One told The Sun: “He kept to himself. He was very quiet and spent a lot of time at home.”

Yesterday, ambulances and police were still at the scene.

Specialist contractors were also seen removing the items.

Officers held a community meeting and discovered their inquiries at the address were related to chemicals.

But one villager said: “People are worried. There are a lot of elderly people and very little crime. Nothing like this has ever happened here before.”
