CORONATION Street’s new boss Kate Brooks has warned there are some shock departures to come as she wields the ax on the cast.

Speaking to The Sun about the exciting storylines ahead, producer Kate said: “There are a few exits this year, and some unexpected ones that will shock.
“People might not expect exits, but there are a few.”
However, while several cast members are set to leave the series, Kate is making her mark with a series of returns and new additions.
Villain Rob Donovan will be back in a big way, causing chaos for his son Bobby, sister Carla and her new relationship with Lisa Swain.

Actor Marc Baylis has already returned to filming, and Kate explains: “Last time we left Rob languishing in prison.
“He’s made mistakes. He’s coming back to the show and we think he might be a reformed character who’s seen the errors of his ways, but whether that’s the case or not, I don’t know!
“He’s definitely coming back and causing a lot of trouble for Carla and Lisa.
“Just when Carla and Lisa think it’s safe to sit down and watch Netflix, along comes Rob Donovan and disrupts everything.
“So it’s a big story for them and a big story for Rob. Lots of twists and turns.”
And Kate represents a long-forgotten character who was first mentioned almost 40 years ago.

She brings in Kevin and Debbie Webster’s brother, Carl, who has never been seen on screen before.
Kate revealed: “We have Carl Webster coming to the show, who is Debbie and Kevin’s brother, to build the Webster clan.
“We have big stories for Debbie and Kevin. It’s about building that clan.
“To me the Websters, Barlows, and Platts are the great clans.”
A Corrie cast cull is desperately needed
The Sun’s Soaps editor Carl Greenwood reveals why axing actors might not be the worst thing for a show
CORONATION Street is one of the most watched shows on television.
Millions tune in every week to see what happens in Weatherfield – but the show no longer tops the 20 million it watched at its peak.
And while it may be the most watched mode on ITV – the reality is that the television advertising market has plunged along with the viewing figures.
Running Corrie for three hours a week is a huge task – and it comes with a huge bill. There’s a budget crisis at ITV and it’s affecting the soap.
Characters disappear for months without any explanation – Gail Platt barely appeared in her own exit story for crying out loud.
If the characters are not being used – it’s time for the bosses to make tough decisions and give them up.
There are tons of characters that are well past their sell-by dates and are dragging the show down.
If Corrie is to survive – let alone thrive – Kate will have to be ruthless.
And it won’t be a moment too soon when Kevin faces a battle with cancer when he discovers he has testicular cancer.
There will also be new families, a massive house fire and harrowing tales of knife crime in the first few months of the year.
