Coronation Street icon Helen Worth’s exit storyline REVEALED as legendary character returns for her final scenes – The Sun

CORONATION Helen Worth’s exit street story will see Gail rekindle her romance with Martin Platt and sail off into the sunset, The Sun can reveal.

It means a return to the cobblestones for actor Sean Wilson, who left the ITV soap in 2005 to become a cheese maker.

Bosses believe the move marks a fitting end for Corrie favorite Gail when actress Helen, 73, leaves the ITV soap at the end of the year after five decades.

Despite their 10-year union ending when nurse Martin had an affair, he is considered the most successful of the six marriages of ill-fated Gail.

A source said: “A number of options were considered for Gail’s exit from the cobbles, but bosses knew the moment was needed to truly celebrate one of Corrie’s most iconic characters, as well as honoring Helena’s stunning performance on the soap.

“It just wasn’t right for me to kill her or for Gail to experience more tragedy after, let’s face it, a pretty traumatic life.

“Martin was always seen as the one who got away and bosses are delighted they managed to lure Sean back to wave Gail goodbye.

“The plot has many nuances, twists and turns, but all the writers want this to feel like a beautiful ending to Gaila’s story, with her finally finding her happy ending.”

Helen confirmed earlier this month that she had signed her final contract and would be leaving the soap at the end of 2024.

She said: “This year seemed like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.

“The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think I’ve quite come to grips with the fact that I’m leaving.”

At the time, bosses teased that Gail would “say goodbye to Weatherfield in a major storyline for the Platt family”.

Helen first appeared on the cobblestones in 1974 as Gail Potter and won a role that would make her one of Britain’s most recognizable soap stars.

Gail had more weddings – and last names – than almost anyone else and she buried all but one of her husbands – Martin.

Shortly after the murder of her first husband Brian Tilsey in 1989, Gail began sleeping with Martin and gave birth to a son, David, in 1990.

She forgave Martin’s affair in 1994, but his affair with fellow nurse Rebecca ended their relationship in 2000.

Others followed, including serial killer Richard Hillman, then Joe McIntyre – who died in an accident while trying to fake his own death for an insurance payout.

Sean played Martin from 1985 to 2005 and then trained as a chef, winning awards with his Saddleworth Cheese Company.

He reprized his role in Corrie for several episodes in 2018 as Martin said goodbye to his family, including son David, before emigrating to New Zealand.

Earlier this year, Sean said he would consider returning for the real story.

He said: “I think the character is well remembered and people are generally very nice, very complimentary, and long may it continue.

“If the question was put before me, I would have to think about it.”
