Writer Jonathan Harvey went on to write the scripts for 331 Coronation Street for Sally Dynevor, Helen Worth and William Roache.

Now the personality has announced his departure, just as his final episodes hit the airwaves on October 2.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “Tonight is my last episode of Corrie. Paul’s funeral.

“Jan McVerry wrote the first half and I wrote the second. Of course everything will be simple and everyone will manage and everything will be beautiful,” along with a series of eye emojis.

One devastated fan responded to the writer, saying: “What do you mean your last???? NO, definitely not!”

After reading the comment, he then admitted that he actually left the soap five months ago.

However, the scenes he personally wrote were only aired this week.

Jonathan replied: “I actually left five months ago, but it was recorded so far in advance that it took me until now to air my last one!”

The acclaimed writer also hinted that he would like to return to the cobblestones sometime in the future.

He added: “I need a break after twenty years. I hope to be back!”

Jonathan’s final episodes were dramatic as Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) tried to kiss his ex-boyfriend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce).

It was after his late husband Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) passed away before he could say goodbye at the hospital.
