The horror unfolded after officers forced their way into a house in Costessey, near Norwich, following a call from a member of the public this morning.

They discovered a tragic family – two young girls, a 45-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, dead inside.

Detective Chief Constable Chris Burgess from Norfolk Police confirmed three people lived at the house and a fourth was visiting.

He also said police had previously contacted residents following a missing persons investigation before Christmas.

Police have not released further details of how they died, but Gary Blundell, a Lib Dem councillor, said there was “no danger to the public”.

A police cordon is currently in place on a quiet housing estate in Allan Bedford Crescent.

One local told the BBC that police were not allowing people to leave their homes while they investigated.

They added: “I spoke to the officers at the cordon and they said they would probably be there for most of the day but they wouldn’t tell me any more than that.”

Inquiries by the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team are now underway to formally identify the four individuals.

DCI Burgess said: “Our investigation is at a very early stage and this is clearly a very disturbing and tragic incident.

“While we are following a number of lines of inquiry, at this time we believe this is an isolated incident.

“I understand the news of this incident will come as a shock to the local community and we will release more information as soon as we can.”
