CRISTIANO RONALDO was in tears after missing an extra-time penalty amid extraordinary scenes at Euro 2024.
Mum Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro was seen distraught in the stands after Jan Oblak’s brilliant save from Ron’s spot-kick in Portugal’s Round of 16 match with Slovenia.

But there was an exciting twist for the Manchester United legend when the contest went into a shoot-out.
Ron not only scored, he APOLOGIZED to the Portugal fans – as his side won 3-0 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
But it looked different in the 105th minute – when Oblak jumped at full length and kicked Ron’s powerful penalty kick.
At first, the 39-year-old striker just put his head in his hands and continued on.
But when the first extra half-hour period ended seconds later, his emotions flared.
Teammates tried to comfort Ron as the tears flowed, seemingly uncontrollably.
The Al-Nassr star’s Euro 2016 team-mate Jose Fonte told the BBC: “He’s an emotional guy – he wants to score more than anything. It’s going to hurt him.”
Meanwhile, as the cameras turned to the stands, his mum also looked teary.

Ronaldo entered the game on a career-worst streak of seven international matches without a goal.
And while Portugal struggled against Slovenia’s outstanding defence, Ron had only a few opportunities in normal time to break that duck.

Then came his defeat in overtime from the spot.
But Ronaldo showed his mental strength when the match went to penalties.
He shook off a shot from the spot into the opposite corner from his failed attempt.
And instead of celebrating, he folded his arms and made a humble expression – a gesture that said he was sorry to his country’s fans inside the Frankfurt Arena.

Teammates quickly rallied around the five-time Ballon d’Or winner
Portugal then achieved a pleasant success in the shot while Slovenia lost from the spot.
But it was a match where most of the drama beforehand came from the icon’s emotions rather than the physical actions of his sub-par side.

How Portugal performed at the Euros with Cristiano Ronaldo
CRISTIANO RONALDO has been a model of longevity for more than two decades in a remarkable international career.
Euro 2004
After his international debut in 2003, Ronaldo’s first Euro came in 2004.
Ronaldo marked his Euro debut with a goal in a 2-1 defeat to Greece – his first goal for Portugal.
He scored the second in the semi-final win over the Netherlands, but Portugal faced Greece again in the final, losing by a shock score of 1-0.
Euro 2008
Ronaldo captained Portugal four years later, but Euro 2008 was the tournament with the least impact he had.
There was still time for an outstanding performance, as Ronaldo scored once and added two more in the group stage win over the Czech Republic.
Euro 2012
Playing for Real Madrid at the time, Ronaldo was the top scorer at Euro 2012, with three goals, including a brace in the group stage against the Netherlands.
Portugal’s quarter-final against the Czech Republic was heading for a stalemate with 10 minutes to go and they needed a special moment from him.
His powerful header in the dying minutes took Portugal to the semi-finals where they lost on penalties to Spain.
Euro 2016
Ronaldo scored three goals at Euro 2016 as Portugal became CHAMPIONS after beating France 1-0 in extra time in the final.
After picking up an injury in the first 16 minutes against France, he was forced to watch from the sidelines.
However, the Portugal captain became a cheerleader and helped coach his teammates to a historic victory.
He equaled Michel Platini’s record of nine goals by the end of Euro 2016.
Euro 2020
Ronaldo once again made history with FIVE goals at Euro 2020, the most of any player at Euro.
It was probably the least exciting thing for Portugal though, as they crashed out in the round of 16 after losing 1-0 to Belgium.
With his goals in this tournament, Ronaldo became the best scorer of the European Championship with 14 goals.
