The baby, who has been named Elsa, was wrapped in a towel and left in a shopping bag on the street.
Luckily, the quick-thinking walker kept the newborn warm until paramedics arrived and rushed her to the hospital.
The Met said she was not injured and is now being cared for by hospital staff.
Police also confirmed the girl, who is believed to be black or mixed race, was less than an hour old when she was found – although it is not clear how long she had been in the bag.
Officers have launched an urgent appeal to find the baby’s mother amid fears she may need medical attention.
Chief Superintendent Simon Crick, who leads Newham Police, said: “I am grateful to members of the public who stayed at the scene to speak to officers and paramedics – your actions helped save the baby’s life.
“Our thoughts now turn to the baby’s mother; we are extremely concerned for her welfare as she will be going through a traumatic ordeal and will need immediate medical attention after the birth.
“Trained medics and specialists are ready to support her and we invite her to call or walk to the nearest hospital or police station.
“If you are a mother of a baby, know that your daughter is fine, whatever your circumstances, get help by dialing 999.”
Police said the baby was found at the intersection of Greenway and High Street South around 9:13 p.m.
The revelations came as temperatures plunged to -4C in London overnight, while weather warnings for snow and ice were in place across the UK.
Anyone with information about who the child’s mother could be can call 999 quoting ref CAD 6876/18 Jan.
