Key works of English literature have apparently been singled out by a government anti-terrorism section in the U.K. as potential catalysts for right-wing extremism, prompting one author whose work is on the list to criticise the agency’s tactics.
According to The Spectator, Prevent’s Research Information and Communications Unit created a list of potentially hazardous works that includes well-known authors including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, George Orwell, Joseph Conrad, and Aldous Huxley.
Along with Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Edmund Burke, Thomas Carlyle, Adam Smith, and William Shakespeare, it is also claimed that supporters of “the far-right and Brexit” are said to have read and enjoyed works by these authors.
The “Prevent duty” was adopted by the U.K. in 2011 as part of its more comprehensive “Contest” counterterrorism strategy. According to its recommendations, its main goal is to use preventative measures to lessen the likelihood of terrorist threats, which includes preventing people from being drawn into terrorist operations.
According to the Northern Irish publication News Letter, Ulster Unionist Party councillor John Kyle criticised the list. “I know that totalitarian and communist regimes have viewed Christianity as dangerously subversive, but when the British Government labels C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books as a terrorist threat, its counter-terrorism unit has lost touch with reality,” he stated.
Kyle’s sentiments were shared by author Douglas Murray, who broke the news of the list and noted that his 2017 book “The Strange Death of Europe” had also been singled out. According to him, the list “is a sign that the people advising the government have completely lost their way.” He said this to Fox News Digital.
Murray noted that Prevent was initially founded to combat Islamic extremism but has since changed its focus. “This is quite typical that you set something up in government to deal with one issue, and it ends up spreading its remit until its remit is so broad that it includes the mainstream texts of the culture,” Murray said.
“It’s exceptionally self-immolating, all because they can’t deal with the one thing they were set up to address at the beginning,” he said. The list was revealed as a result of Commissioner for Public Appointments William Shawcross’ evaluation of the Prevent plan, which found that it placed too much emphasis on right-wing extremism and not enough on Islamic extremism, according to The Guardian.
Shawcross’ report received criticism, despite the fact that, from April 2021 to March 2022, according to Prevent’s own figures, more people were referred for severe right-wing radicalization (20%) than for radical Islamist radicalization (16%).
