Cyndi Lauper’s Son Arrested and Charged With Gun Possession in N.Y.C.

Cyndi Lauper’s son Declyn Lauper has been released from prison after being arrested and charged with allegedly illegally carrying a loaded firearm in New York.

According to the New York Daily News , the 26-year-old — who is the only child of the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” singer — was taken into police custody moments after the 24-year-old was shot Wednesday night on W. 112th St. in Harlem. near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

In a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan Criminal Court according to the New York Daily News, Declyn was arrested nearby after the shooting. He was allegedly in possession of a bag containing a loaded Glock with seven rounds in the magazine. The lawsuit alleges that Lauper possessed a weapon “with the intent to unlawfully use it against another,” and charged him with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to New York Postprosecutors alleged that Declyn and another man took an Uber ride from Queens to 135 West 112th St. immediately before the crime.

ABC News identified the victim as Omar Lewin and noted that he was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Lewin was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital where he was said to be in stable condition, the New York Daily News reported.

After the arrest, a judge set Declyn’s bail at $20,000 cash, New York’s ABC 7 reports.

Declyn appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday.

“The defendant and the individual arrested separately drove to the location both armed with firearms to engage in what appears to be illegal activity,” Assistant District Attorney Harriet Jiranek said during his hearing. Declyn pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Declyn’s father, Law and order actor David Thornton, was spotted at the teller window at Manhattan Criminal Court carrying an envelope containing a large sum of money shortly before Declyn was released on bail on Friday.

Declyn is expected back in court on Tuesday. He hired legal counsel.

PEOPLE reached out to the NYPD for comment, but they did not immediately respond.

Declyn, a rapper who also goes by the name “Dex,” has had run-ins with the police before.

In July 2022, he was arrested again in New York after police allegedly found him sitting in a stolen 2014 Mercedes Benz C350, PEOPLE confirmed at the time. At that time, the 24-year-old was detained and charged with the crime of unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Declyn pleaded guilty in Manhattan Criminal Court and was ordered to “stay out of trouble for one year,” New York Post reported at the time.
