Dj Gregorio Vijesti
For the first five years of his life, DJ Gregory had to “crawl like an army” between the rooms of his parents’ house. He couldn’t walk and couldn’t stand up on his own.
She had cerebral palsy, a congenital condition that affects movement, muscle tone and posture, when she was born ten weeks premature. Grgur’s existence was made difficult by the fact that he was born with crossed eyes and crooked legs.
His abductor muscles, which help maintain balance, were removed during one of his five surgeries when he was in first grade to untangle his legs. After the last operation, both legs were broken, put in casts, and spread with a rod while they healed to prevent them from ever crossing again.
The boy, who underwent six eye surgeries, spent a month and a half of that in a wheelchair. Gregory, however, began acting the way the doctors warned his parents he would never do after he was born, as his cast was removed.
Gregory has also become a regular at PGA TOUR events since 2008, playing an average of 45-48 tournaments per year. A player of his choice walks with him for all four rounds. Gregory joins another professional for the last two days in case the first one fails to enter.
Since 2008, Gregory has traveled more than 14,000 miles and raised more than $1 million for his Walking For Kids foundation, thanks largely to the generosity of TOUR athletes like World No. 1 Jon Rahm, who is his WM pro. Phoenix Open this week.
Gregory received the TOUR Award of Valor Tuesday during a surprise event at TPC Scottsdale. This honor is given to a person who has overcome adversity, such as an accident or life-changing illness, to make a significant contribution to the game.
Gregory is the first non-PGA TOUR player to receive the honor. Since he first ran in 2012, Erik Compton (2013), Jarrod Lyle (2015), Gene Sauers (2017) and Morgan Hoffmann have each won it four times. (2020).
